White bouquets in Istanbul: roses, lilies and how to keep them white

White bouquets in Istanbul can leave a mark before they leave the vase: white lily pollen stains fabric and is hard to remove, so anthers are pinched off once the flower opens, and any fresh pollen on clothing is lifted with tape, never rubbed. The bigger decision with a white bouquet is which flower it is, what shape it takes and whose home it is going to, not the shade of white itself.

Which flowers make a white bouquet

Roses make up most of the white bouquets in the section, with lilies and hydrangeas as the other two options. A "French" rose is not a variety: it is a technique, where the outer petals are turned back by hand until the flower opens into a wider, looser cup.

Dutch roses are the greenhouse standard, grown for straight stems that usually run forty to seventy centimetres. Where a longer stem matters, tall white roses are listed on their own, separate from the standard Dutch stems.

White does not have to stand alone. Pairing it with pink follows a monochrome or an analogous colour scheme, and the section carries both: eleven white and pink roses sit at one end, five white and pink hydrangeas at the other. Because lilies and hydrangeas carry large heads on each stem, a handful of stems already reads as a full bouquet, well before the count reaches what a rose bouquet needs.

Victorian flower dictionaries gave the white rose one meaning, purity, but the books never agreed beyond that, and different guides paired white with different virtues. Colour sets a mood rather than spelling out a message, so a white bouquet reads as gentle and formal more than as a coded sentence.

Counting matters more than colour in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and most of the former Soviet Union. An odd number of stems goes to the living, an even number is brought to remember the dead. Every count in this section keeps to that rule: five, eleven, fifteen, nineteen, twenty-five, fifty-one and a hundred and one.

That custom does not travel everywhere. In France, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Poland, large chrysanthemums are reserved for funerals and rarely appear in any other bouquet. A white bouquet sent in memory of someone is worth checking against the recipient's own country before it is ordered.

Wrapping, basket or purse: the shape of a white bouquet

A white bouquet here comes in one of several shapes: designer wrapping, wrapping in coffee-coloured paper, a purse holding a small bunch of roses, a basket, or an armful of a hundred and one white roses with no wrapping at all.

A basket stands without a vase. Inside it, a waterproof liner holds a block of soaked floral foam, and the foam is watered daily across its whole surface, not just at one spot. A hand-tied bouquet works differently: built up in a spiral, stem over stem, it holds itself upright on a table without any support.

Chocolate rounds off either shape. Belgian chocolate, in lips or in hearts, sits in the same grid as the bouquets and travels alongside them.

Keeping white flowers white: pollen, water and pets

Lily pollen is the detail that catches people out. Once the flower has fully opened, the anthers, the small orange pads on the ends of the stamens, come off easily between two fingers or with tweezers. Left on a petal or brushed onto fabric, fresh pollen lifts away with sticky tape; rubbing only grinds it in.

Every part of a lily is toxic to cats, including the pollen and even the water left standing in the vase. A home with a cat is not the place for a lily bouquet, whatever else is in it.

Hydrangea drinks more than most cut flowers and takes in water through its petals as well as its stem. A head that has drooped can still be brought back: submerged in cool water for an hour or two, it usually firms up again. Roses in the same vase last around a week with ordinary care, water changed and stems recut.

Every bouquet here is put together to order, after the flowers for it have been bought. A photo of the finished bouquet goes out before the courier leaves, so anything that needs fixing, including a swapped flower, gets sorted first and shows up in that photo.

The card is free and can be left unsigned if the sender wants the flowers to arrive without a name attached. The courier works from the recipient's name and address alone; where there is no address to give, the recipient's phone number is enough. How long delivery takes is shown on each bouquet's own page, and most orders are delivered on the day they are placed. Zones and timing beyond that sit on the delivery page.

Roses on their own are worth a look before settling on a mixed white bouquet, and the full range sits in roses. Every other shade sits alongside white in bouquets by colour, and every shape, from hand-tied to basket, is gathered in all bouquets. For anything outside bouquets altogether, the full flower catalogue covers the rest.
