Mother's Day in Madrid: lilies, roses and the flower to leave out

In Spain the chrysanthemum is the flower carried to cemeteries on All Saints' Day, 1 November, and many people leave it off a gift list, associating it with that day rather than with a mother's table. Mother's Day in Madrid falls on the first Sunday of May, and the season's bouquets lean instead on lilies, roses, hydrangea and gerbera, in formats that don't need a vase waiting at the door.

White lilies, pink gerbera, a hydrangea head: flowers for mamá

A lily bouquet paired with gerbera, or the Vozdushny lily bouquet, both suit a table she sits at every day. Lilies, gerbera and lisianthus are greenhouse flowers cut all year, so early May is no obstacle to finding good ones.

Once a lily opens, its anthers are best removed: the orange pollen inside stains fabric badly and is hard to lift once it sets. If there's a cat in the house, lilies are worth skipping altogether: every part of the plant is toxic to cats.

Hydrangea drinks more than most cut flowers and wilts fastest when it runs short of water. A drooping head recovers if it's submerged in cool water for an hour or two, rather than just topped up in the vase. April and May count among the calmer months for cut flowers in Madrid; more on how cut flowers fare through Madrid's year.

Roses in the month of the Parque del Oeste contest

Madrid's Rosaleda in Parque del Oeste opened in 1955, and every May it hosts an international competition for new rose varieties, with the public voting for a "Rosa de Madrid" among the entries. Roses are simply more visible around the city that month, whatever ends up in the bouquet.

A French rose isn't a variety at all: it's a florist turning the outer petals back by hand until the flower opens wider than it would on its own. One rose in the mix stands apart for size, with a bud that can reach seven centimetres across, white at the base and edged in pink. With reasonable care it holds for close to two weeks in the vase, and comes loose or set inside a box.

For anyone who finds a dozen plain roses too solemn for the occasion, Roses with Lisianthus softens the bunch with a second flower. Lisianthus is another greenhouse regular, in the shops whatever the month. Other colours and pairings sit under roses for anyone browsing further.

A hat box at her door, or a plant that stays

A hat box needs no vase at home. Its stems sit in floral foam, watered daily in a thin stream over the whole surface rather than poured into one spot, and the box travels flat, never tilted; kept this way, the flowers inside last about as long as they would in water.

A basket suits a table or a sideboard, where it can sit low and wide without anything to arrange around it. A potted plant is the choice for a mother who would rather the gift kept growing than faded within the week; neither format leaves her hunting for a vase. Cream roses paired with peonies in a box are another option worth a look, softer than an all-rose bunch.

Early May in Madrid: when to book Mother's Day flower delivery

The first Sunday of May can land anywhere between the 1st and the 7th. In years when it falls on 2 May, it shares the calendar with the Día de la Comunidad de Madrid.

Order volumes on the day itself run far above normal, so delivery windows are wider and nothing is promised down to the minute. The calmer route is to set the date and slot in advance rather than order on the morning itself, and arranging Mother's Day in Madrid ahead of time also leaves more room to match the flowers described above.

The courier sends a photo of the finished bouquet before setting off, and a card message can be added in your own words at checkout. Zones, hotel deliveries and orders placed from abroad are covered on the delivery page.

Lilies with gerbera suit a table she sits at every day, and roses turn more festive with a hat box or a basket waiting at the door. Where the gift should outlast the week, a potted plant or a box of peonies makes the better choice.
