Peonies with delivery in Monaco: varieties, two import seasons, and the cut stage

The peony needs no explanation. A full, globe-shaped bud, dense layers of petals, a light honeyed scent — that is enough for the bouquet to speak without a label. In Monaco the peony is chosen when the occasion truly matters: an anniversary, a wedding, a serious mark of respect.

It is not grown here — this climate lacks the proper cold winter without which a peony cannot set its buds. It is an honest imported and seasonal flower. The category covers single-variety bouquets from 9 to 50 stems, mixed arrangements with roses, lisianthus, and eucalyptus, and hat boxes for wedding and corporate orders.

The main varieties in the catalogue

Each variety solves its own task — from a classic romantic bouquet to a complex wedding arrangement. They differ in bud shape, colour range, fragrance, and vase life.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — a 1906 classic, pale-pink double bud up to 18 cm, honeyed scent. The all-purpose choice for a wedding or a milestone.
  • Karl Rosenfield — a dark-red, dense peony. Suited to a dramatic wine palette.
  • Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson "drop" at the centre. The most photogenic white peony, a wedding-floristry classic.
  • Coral Charm — shifts from coral-peach to creamy yellow as it opens. One of the most fashionable varieties of recent years.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a creamy centre, a light vanilla scent, a romantic look.
  • Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross of herbaceous and tree peony, blooming longer and larger than the usual sorts.

The cut stage and why it matters

The main rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage. That is a coloured bud still soft to the touch. If the peony springs back like a marshmallow when squeezed, it will open in 1–2 days and last 7–9 days. If the bud is hard and green, it may not open at all. If it is already fully open, it will last 2–3 days at most.

Every batch passes a florist's hand check against this criterion. Only "marshmallow" buds of the right firmness go into shipping — so the recipient sees the full blooming cycle, not the final fading stage. If you need open peonies for a specific date, say so when ordering and we will pick a batch with the right head start.

Two seasons and occasions

The peony arrives in Monaco in two waves. The first is the Northern Hemisphere, roughly May to June: the main cut comes from the Netherlands, France, and Italy — all close at hand. The second is the Southern Hemisphere, November to January, mostly from Chile and New Zealand. In these weeks the peony is at its freshest and most affordable. The rest of the year it is all but absent, and that is normal.

The May wave lands neatly on a run of spring occasions: the Bal de la Rose, Fête des Mères on the last Sunday of May, and the Riviera wedding season. Saint-Valentin in February falls between seasons, so the peony is a rarity then and must be ordered well ahead. Mixed bouquets of peonies and garden roses form their own class: the two flowers are close in shape and complement each other in palette and vase life.

"The peony does not forgive haste. Order 3–4 days ahead, let the bud open in a cool room at the recipient's place, keep it away from the window and the sea. A freshly delivered closed peony is an investment in the moment, not the moment itself."

— Camille Béranger, florist with 15 years of experience on the French Riviera

Delivery specifics

Monaco's climate is Mediterranean: mild winters, warm dry summers, humid sea air. For the delicate peony this is a demanding scenario, so our cold chain runs end to end — from warehouse to door. In summer we move the flowers in refrigerated transport and aim to deliver in the morning, before the air heats up. In the heat the bud opens fast, and a couple of extra hours in the sun can eat half its life.

We cover every district: Monte-Carlo, La Condamine, Fontvieille, Larvotto, Monaco-Ville, Moneghetti, Saint-Roman. We carry to the hotels and to yachts in Port Hercule. Catalogue prices are in euros (€), paid by card online. The season is short, so for spring weddings and the Bal de la Rose, place the order 3–4 days ahead — peak dates sell out early.

Care at home

After delivery, refresh the cut at a 45° angle, remove all leaves below the water line, and place the peonies in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every 2 days. Don't set them near fruit or a heater — ethylene and warmth halve the peony's life.

In warm Monaco coolness is what counts: keep the bouquet in an air-conditioned room, away from the window and direct sun, not under the flow of cold air. Mist the buds lightly once a day. If the room is dry from the sea and sun, set a glass of water beside them for humidity — over-dry air makes the petals drop faster.
