Red peonies: the shade shifts while the flower opens

Red peony buds still closed, almost black in colour

A red peony bud is nearly black. The outer petals are so densely pigmented that in a box they look like dark plums, and nobody would guess from that stage what the open flower is going to be.

The colour lightens as the head opens, not the other way round.

The sequence over a week

On the first evening the head is closed and the tone reads deepest. Over the next two days the outer petals fold back, the inner ones lift, and light starts passing through the thinner tissue near the centre, so the whole flower brightens by a visible step. By the middle of the week many varieties have moved towards a cooler, cleaner red, and some carry a raspberry edge that was invisible while the bud was tight.

At the end the petals go translucent and the edges silver slightly before they drop. That silvering is normal ageing rather than damage.

Temperature controls the pace of all of it. A cool room stretches the sequence across a week, and a warm one compresses it into two or three days, which is the single most useful thing to know before ordering.

Judging ripeness on a dark flower

With white and pink varieties you can read the stage by eye, because the green drains out of the outer petals as the bud matures. Red hides that signal.

So the check is done by hand. A bud ready to open gives slightly under the thumb, like a marshmallow, while an unripe one is hard and will often never open at all, browning at the edge instead.

Ask for tight buds when the event is several days away and half-open heads when it is tonight.

Sun, shade and the way the colour is seen

Dark petals absorb more light and heat than pale ones, so a red peony scorches on a windowsill faster than a white one standing beside it. The edge dries, browns and curls, and no amount of fresh water reverses it.

Open red peonies in a clear vase beside a lamp

Low light causes the opposite problem. Red pigment swallows what little light there is, and by candle or a dim hallway lamp the heads merge into one silhouette, taking the volume you paid for with them. Pale wrapping paper, a clear glass vase and a lamp within reach all put the shape back.

Care, and what it is worth

Peony stems are thick, stiff and thirsty. Fill the vase at least halfway rather than an inch deep, take off every leaf that would sit under the water, and recut the stems on the slant when you change it.

Cloudy water is the usual reason a bouquet fails early.

Red peonies suit an anniversary, a reunion after a long gap, or a partner who finds roses too predictable a gesture. They also work in a room that needs one strong point of colour, where the occasion is nothing more than the flowers being in season. If they are going to a recipient in Nice whose flat runs hot, order them closed and say so, because red peonies opened by a warm delivery van arrive at their brightest and start dropping from there.
