Tulip delivery in Porto: Dutch groups, a cool winter and fast logistics

The tulip brings a piece of northern spring to Porto. The city's Atlantic winter is cool and very wet, without real cold, and a bright armful of tulips on the table in February adds as much light to a home as the sun through the clouds. The north takes to them readily — for an occasion and for no reason at all. And the closeness to the Dutch glasshouses through the MARF market keeps supply fast and affordable for most of the year.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, kraft-wrapped armfuls, boxed compositions and mixed builds with hyacinths, ranunculus and eucalyptus. Tulips work to any budget: a modest bunch of 9–11 stems looks no worse than a monumental armful of 51 — variety and presentation decide everything.

Groups and varieties in the catalogue

More than 3,000 tulip varieties are on the world register. About 35–45 key ones reach the working shelf, sorted by bud shape, stem length and flowering habit.

  • Triumph — the classic cup-shaped bud, 40–50 cm stem. The largest group by volume. Varieties: Strong Gold (yellow), Negrita (purple), Ile de France (red), Purple Prince (purple).
  • Darwin Hybrid — large-headed, bud up to 12 cm across. Apeldoorn (scarlet), Ivory Floradale (cream). For large armfuls and accent bouquets.
  • French Tulips — long-stemmed premium tulips up to 70 cm. Maureen (white), Menton (soft peach). For weddings and high-end floristry.
  • Parrot — parrot tulips with fringed petals and a "torn" texture. Rococo (red), Blue Parrot (blue-violet). For statement and dramatic compositions.
  • Double / Peony — double "peony-flowered" tulips. Mount Tacoma (white), Foxtrot (pink), Angelique (pastel pink). An alternative to peonies out of season.
  • Queen of Night — an almost-black deep purple shade. A favourite of interior designers and signature floristry.

Season and the main occasions

The tulip's natural season is April to May. Through forced greenhouse growing the Dutch run flowering from October to June, which covers all the main Portuguese occasions: Natal, Dia dos Namorados (14 February), Dia da Mãe (the first Sunday of May) and the spring celebrations. For Dia dos Namorados and Dia da Mãe, place orders 7–10 days ahead — lots sell out early.

A Porto winter suits the tulip especially well: cool but frost-free ocean air prolongs flowering better than an over-heated flat. Summer heat, on the other hand, is not for it — in July and August the tulip all but leaves the catalogue, giving way to more heat-tolerant flowers. Summers here are milder than in the south, so the tulip's season in Porto runs a touch longer.

A tulip's quirk: it keeps growing

A cut tulip is a living plant. In the vase the stem grows another 2–3 cm in the first days, and the bouquet changes shape from day to day: by the end of the first week the tulips "lean" towards the light — this is normal and beautiful, not a fault. To keep an even shape, use a tall, narrow vase that holds the stems upright.

A fresh tulip is easy to spot: a firm, cool stem, a tightly closed coloured bud, leaves free of yellow spots. If the stem is warm and soft, the lot is already in its final stage. Every delivery of ours is no more than four days from the cut.

"A tulip in Porto is about spring in February. It's damp outside, rain off the ocean, and someone sets an armful of tulips at home — and the flat is at once warmer and brighter. Our cool winter is a gift to the tulip: it lasts longer than in the hot south. The customer here is discerning — they'll tell a Darwin from a French, and ask about stem length."

Freshness and logistics

Dutch tulips from Aalsmeer reach the MARF market in Maia by two routes: by air into Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport or by refrigerated road through Spain. We carry tulips in cold hydration boxes, stems in water at +6 to +8 °C right up to delivery. A recipient in Foz do Douro or Boavista gets the full flowering cycle of 5–7 days with proper care.

Delivery specifics in Porto

Porto's climate is Atlantic, damp and cool: a mild, wet winter with almost no frost, a moderately warm summer of +24 to +26 °C and, only with a rare easterly wind, short spikes past +35 °C. Winter and spring are the ideal time for the tulip, while in summer heat it is best replaced by hardier flowers. In summer bouquets travel with cooling inserts and are delivered in the cooler hours. The best season for tulip delivery is November to April.

We deliver tulips across all districts of Porto: Ribeira, Sé, Baixa and the Avenida dos Aliados, Cedofeita, Bonfim, Massarelos, Lordelo do Ouro, Foz do Douro, Nevogilde, Aldoar, Boavista, Paranhos, Ramalde and Campanhã, as well as Vila Nova de Gaia and Matosinhos. Payment is in euro (€, EUR). Order ahead — 3–7 days, and a week ahead for Dia dos Namorados and Dia da Mãe.

Home care

Tulips need a different approach from roses. The key rules: cold water only, +6 to +10 °C; re-cut with a straight blade (not at an angle) every two days; keep the water level low, 5–7 cm from the bottom. Tulips do not tolerate deep water — the stems rot.

Don't place tulips next to daffodils without preparation: daffodil sap speeds their ageing by 30–40%. If you want a mixed bouquet, keep the daffodils apart for 24 hours, rinse their stems and only then add them to the shared vase. A Porto flat is cool in winter, which suits the tulip, but keep it away from a hot radiator, direct sun on a south-facing window and the draught of the AC. At night you can move it to the coolest spot: that adds 2–3 days of life.
