Flowers for a wife: repetition is the real problem

A bouquet for a wife differs from every other kind in one respect. It is never a single event. Over the years they accumulate into dozens, and at some point another bouquet stops registering as an occasion at all.

The issue is not the flowers. It is predictability. The same roses on the same date for ten years become a ritual, pleasant enough and entirely unmemorable.

A close relationship gives access to information no other giver has.

The favourite colour, and more importantly the disliked one. A bad shade spoils the effect more than a good one improves it.

Her tolerance for fragrance. Lilies and stock in a bedroom interfere with sleep, and establishing that once helps forever.

The size of the vase. Not in the abstract, but the one actually in the cupboard.

Her feelings about cut flowers at all. Some people would rather have a plant, precisely because it does not die within a week.

A good bouquet for a wife is different from last year's. That is the only criterion that survives a decade.

On occasions

Anniversaries, birthdays and calendar dates are served by a substantial bouquet. Peonies, roses and designed mixed arrangements all belong here.

Apologies work differently. The note matters more than the size, and a modest bouquet with something honest written on the card outperforms an armful with nothing.

Flowers with no occasion attached remain the strongest option, for the simple reason that nobody is expecting them.

If flowers are crossing Prague to a home while she is at work, agree an hour or send them to the office instead. A bouquet that spent the day with a concierge loses both its freshness and its effect.
