Nine peonies: wrapping, weight and the moment of handover

Peony bunch wrapped in matte paper with a water pouch at the base

Everything about the handover happens in the first few seconds, and most of it is decided by how the bunch was wrapped rather than by what is inside it.

Nine peonies land in the arms with real weight. Thick stems, heavy heads and a water pouch at the base add up to something the recipient adjusts their grip for, and that adjustment is part of the impression. Weight is read before colour.

What the wrapping has to solve

The heads must not be crushed. Peony petals bruise where paper presses on them, and a bruise shows as a brown edge within a day, so the paper should stand clear of the dome rather than clamp around it.

Gathering matters just as much, since a tie that sits too low lets the bunch open like a fan the moment it changes hands.

Then there is water. A pouch of film and damp wadding around the cut ends keeps the flowers drinking through the journey, and it is also the part that leaks down a recipient's sleeve if it was tied in a hurry. Check that the pouch is bound above the widest point of the stems, not around it.

Paper, film and what each does to the flower

Matte paper is the usual choice for peonies because it absorbs the little moisture that collects around the heads. Cellophane traps it, and trapped moisture on a peony bud shows up as translucent patches on the outer petals.

A tall paper collar makes the bunch look larger from the front while hiding the outline entirely from the side, which is a trade rather than an improvement.

Fabric, hessian and heavy card all add weight to something already heavy. At this count the finished bunch is carried against the chest with two hands, so anything that adds bulk at the base makes it harder to hold and much harder to hand over cleanly. Hessian has a second problem. It frays against the petals in a moving car, and the fibres catch on the outer edges where the colour is palest. Ribbon at the tie is the one addition that costs nothing in weight.

The handover itself

Handing over a large bunch of peonies at a front door

Give it head-up and stems down, with the tie in the recipient's hand rather than the paper. People instinctively grab the widest part, which is the wrapping, and the flowers slide out of it.

Warn them about the weight as you pass it across, particularly if they are holding something else.

Indoors the wrapping should come off within the hour. It has done its job by then, and paper left on overnight holds damp against the lower stems where the leaves rot fastest.

Ordering for a delivery

A courier in Prague carries a bunch of this size upright in a box or a crate rather than flat on a seat. Ask how it travels if the drive is long, because peonies laid on their side arrive with flattened heads on the underside and no amount of arranging brings the shape back. A crate also keeps the water pouch upright.

Ask for the tie to be firm and the paper loose. That combination survives a car, a lift and a doorstep, and it lets the recipient see the flowers before they see the packaging.

One more thing worth requesting: a card tucked into the tie rather than stapled to the paper, so nothing has to be torn open in front of you.
