Tulips delivered in Riyadh: varieties, Dutch imports, and the winter season in Riyadh

The tulip in Riyadh is a cool-season flower. While northern Europe is in winter, the Najd plateau enjoys mild, comfortable weather, and that is exactly when the tulip is easiest to bring in perfect condition. Saudi Arabia has no fields of its own: every tulip flies in from the Netherlands through King Khalid International Airport, in tight closed buds, and finishes opening at the recipient's home.

The category covers single-variety bouquets of 11 to 51 stems, mixed spring arrangements, and gift boxes pairing tulips with narcissus, ranunculus, and hyacinth. The peak of range and value falls in the Saudi winter — from November through March, when the Dutch cut runs in a steady stream.

Groups and varieties

More than 3,000 tulip varieties are registered worldwide. Some 30–40 key ones reach the shelf, split into groups by bud shape, stem length, and bloom timing.

  • Triumph — a classic cup-shaped bud, stem 40–50 cm. The most widespread group. Varieties: Strong Gold (yellow), Negrita (purple), Ile de France (red).
  • Darwin Hybrids — large-headed, up to 12 cm across, a very sturdy stem. Apeldoorn (scarlet), Ivory Floradale (cream). For voluminous single-variety bouquets.
  • French Tulips — long-stemmed, up to 70 cm. Maureen (white), Menton (soft pink). For wedding floristry.
  • Parrot — parrot tulips, with fringed, "torn" petals. Rococo (red), Blue Parrot (purple). For expressive arrangements.
  • Double / Peony — double "peony-type". Mount Tacoma (white), Foxtrot (pink). An alternative to peonies outside their season.
  • Queen of Night — almost black, deep purple. For a dark, vintage palette.

Season and occasions

In Riyadh the tulip is especially apt in the cool months — a natural window for delicate cut flowers. Winter holds the season's main family and corporate events, and the tulip sits well in light, spring-spirited arrangements that contrast with the hot backdrop of the rest of the year.

The tulip is given by the single stem less often than roses — formats of 15, 25, and 51 stems are more typical. It is ordered in any quantity, with no strict odd-number rule. It is also a good corporate flower: clean, neat, with no heavy scent.

The tulip's quirk: it keeps growing

A cut tulip remains a living plant — the stem lengthens by 2–3 cm in the vase over the first days. This is a rare trait among cut flowers, and it is taken into account when building an arrangement.

Because of it, tulips change the bouquet's shape every day and by week's end bend toward the light — this is normal, not a defect. To keep an even shape, set the bouquet in a tall, narrow vase that holds the stems upright.

"The tulip is the most honest flower on sale. A fresh stem feels firm and cool in the hand. In Riyadh the whole task is to deliver the bud closed: in the heat and under the AC, the dry air opens it very fast."

Freshness and logistics

Tulips fly in from the Netherlands on flights into King Khalid International Airport and reach cold storage the day they land. They arrive in closed buds — standard practice that extends freshness: the finishing happens at the recipient's home.

We transport tulips in cold hydroboxes: the stems stay in water at +6…+8°C and the bud keeps its firmness. In the hot months we add a thermal box so the flower doesn't wilt from overheating en route. Until assembly, bouquets are kept in cold storage at +4…+6°C.

Delivery specifics

Riyadh's climate is hot and dry, continental. Summer is long and scorching, +43…+47°C from May through September, the plateau air is dry, and spring can bring dust storms; winter is mild, +18…+22°C by day with cool nights, and far friendlier to the tulip. In summer we deliver delicate cut flowers early in the morning or late in the evening, in refrigerated transport — by day the bud loses its shape in the heat within minutes.

We deliver across all districts of Riyadh: Olaya, Al Malqa, KAFD, the Diplomatic Quarter, Al Nakheel, Hittin, Al Yasmin, Al Sahafa, Granada, As Sulimaniyah. We take corporate orders for offices, restaurants, and hotels. Catalogue prices are in Saudi riyals (SAR, ر.س), paid by card or cash on receipt. In peak winter weeks, book 3–5 days ahead.

Care at home

The tulip is handled differently from roses and peonies. The key rules: only cold water at +6…+10°C, refreshing the cut with a straight (not angled) knife every 2 days, and minimal water in the vase (5–7 cm from the bottom). The tulip can't tolerate deep water — the stems rot.

Don't place tulips next to narcissus and hyacinth — their sap speeds the bud's ageing. On hot days keep the bouquet in the coolest room, away from the direct flow of the AC, and move it to the refrigerator at night to slow opening. A cool +15…+18°C extends the tulips' life to 8–10 days.
