Tulips by quantity: turning a number into a size

Tulips are sold by the stem, and the number in a bouquet name decides more than the price. It sets the diameter, the weight, the type of vase required and how the arrangement will look two days later.

The reason is structural. A tulip is slim and soft. Roses build volume through the head, tulips build it only through count, so each step up the range is more noticeable here than elsewhere.

How the number becomes a size

The figures vary by variety, and the logic behind them holds.

• Five to nine stems. A compact gesture that fits a narrow vase and one hand.
• Eleven to fifteen. A full gift bouquet of familiar proportions.
• Twenty five to thirty five. A dense block of colour needing a wide, stable vase.
• Fifty one and above. An armful carried in two hands and destined for a bucket or a large vase.
• One hundred and one. A bulk order that needs a conversation about delivery.

As a rough guide to diameter, fifteen tulips make a bouquet around twenty centimetres across, and fifty one reach about forty.

Odd and even numbers

Across Russia and neighbouring countries an even number of flowers belongs to funerals, so gift bouquets are built odd. In most of the rest of the world no such convention exists.

The rule also has a ceiling. Up to twenty one stems the count is read at a glance. Beyond that nobody counts, which is why bouquets of fifty and a hundred tulips cause no comment anywhere.

Tulips also keep growing in the vase and lean towards the light, so the bouquet changes shape on day two. That is the flower working normally rather than the arrangement collapsing.
