Fifteen roses: the journey, the wrapping and the handover

Fifteen roses wrapped in a firm paper cone ready for delivery

An armful this size spends its first hours being carried, and that is where most of the damage happens. The flowers leave the workroom in good order; what reaches the recipient depends on how the bouquet was packed, how it lay in the car and how it was passed from one pair of hands to another.

None of that is decoration. It is structural work.

What the wrapping has to do

Fifteen stems left loose splay into a fan within a minute of walking, and the outer petals rub against a sleeve for the rest of the journey. A firm cone of heavy paper holds the shape and keeps the heads from grinding against each other, which is the only thing that really matters in transit.

Kraft holds its form best and shrugs off damp stem ends, though it is coarse and does not suit every shade. Softer matte paper photographs better and creases the moment anyone leans on it. Cellophane protects most of all and condenses inside. Warm condensation sitting on a petal turns into a brown mark by evening. Ribbon is doing work too, since a properly tightened knot keeps the binding point from twisting on the journey.

Whatever the material, more than three layers turns the bouquet into a parcel and hides the flowers from everyone but the person looking straight down at it.

In the car and at the door

A large bouquet travels lying down, on its side, with the heads supported and nothing resting on top of them. Standing it upright in a footwell means every corner rocks the heads against the paper.

Heat is the other enemy of the journey. A parked car in the sun cooks a bouquet faster than a warm room does, and the petals go limp before anything looks obviously wrong.

Then comes the handover itself, which is worth picturing in advance. The bouquet is passed roughly horizontally and taken in two hands, so what the recipient sees first is the top of the dome, not the profile. If the handover happens on a street, in a doorway or on stairs, decide beforehand where the bouquet goes next, because fifteen stems in paper cannot be tucked under an arm and should never be stood on the pavement.

After the paper comes off

Take the wrapping off at home rather than leaving it on for the look. Wet kraft sours against the stem ends, the ribbon presses on stems that need to be drinking freely, and the water clouds sooner with paper sitting in it.

Fifteen roses lying on their side in the boot of a car before delivery

Keep the lowest tie, though. Without it the bouquet loses its spiral in a wide vase and separates into fifteen individual flowers standing at random angles.

There is a case for skipping the wrapping altogether. A bouquet going straight into a vase in a kitchen or an office travels perfectly well in a plain transport sleeve, and what would have been spent on paper buys a longer stem instead.

The alternative worth considering

A box removes most of these problems at once. Foam holds the heads at a set height, the water is already in place, the recipient carries the arrangement by its handles and needs no vase at all, and nothing has to be unwrapped in front of guests.

What a box gives up is the moment of holding an armful, which for some occasions is the entire point.

For a delivery, ask whether the person in Riyadh will be at home or at a desk. Fifteen roses handed over at a workplace need somewhere to stand for the rest of the day, and a bucket of water behind a reception counter has saved more bouquets than any wrapping ever will.
