Pink bouquets: the wrapping decides half of it

Paper is not a container here, it is the largest single block of colour the recipient sees. It usually covers more surface than the flowers themselves, it sits directly against them, and whatever it does to the shade cannot be undone once the bouquet is tied.

That is a bigger deal in this group than in any other, because pink runs from near-white blush through powder, coral and salmon to cold fuchsia, and each of those wants a different neighbour.

What each material does

Brown kraft is the default in a lot of shops and the least helpful choice for pale shades. Its own warm tone sits close to blush and peach, the outline between flower and paper goes soft, and from a few steps away the whole thing reads as one beige mass.

Black matte paper does the opposite. It cuts the bouquet out of the background completely and pushes pale pink towards luminous, which is why it photographs so well. It also makes the gift look formal, sometimes more formal than the sender intended.

White paper is honest and slightly cruel. Manufactured white is cleaner than any petal, so blush and powder next to it look faintly grey, and only saturated pinks hold their own against it.

Grey and sage green are the quiet middle ground. Both are muted enough not to compete and cold enough to keep warm pinks from spreading, and they suit an arrangement meant to live in a room rather than travel to a party.

Matching by temperature, not by name

The word pink covers two families that behave like different colours. Coral, peach and salmon are built on a yellow base; blush, powder and fuchsia are built on a blue one.

Mixing the families inside one bouquet is what makes an arrangement look accidental rather than composed. Mixing them across flowers and paper is worse, because the paper wins on area: a cold fuchsia bouquet in warm peach paper looks muddy along every edge where the two meet.

Match the wrapping to the base, then decide how much contrast you want.

Ribbon, and the parts nobody plans

Ribbon is small in area and loud in effect, since it sits at the point where the hand goes and the eye follows. A satin ribbon in a slightly wrong shade of pink is more noticeable than a badly chosen sheet of paper, so plain cream, grey or a shade taken straight from the darkest flower is the safe route.

Cellophane deserves a mention because it is still common and rarely flattering. It adds gloss and reflections, hides the texture that makes pale petals worth looking at, and traps moisture around the heads.

Check where the paper actually touches the flowers. A tight collar bruises the outer petals of roses within a day, and on pale shades every bruise turns brown and shows.

Practical points

Pink bouquets suit birthdays, thank-yous, new babies and apologies, which is most of the year, and this is the group people fall back on when they do not know the recipient's taste.

If the bouquet is going into a vase at home, ask for the outer paper to come off easily. Many wraps are built as a single fixed cone, and a recipient who cannot open one without scissors ends up cutting stems by accident.

For a recipient in Samui who will keep the flowers at work rather than at home, grey or sage wrapping travels better than black, since matte dark paper marks with every fingerprint and shows every scuff picked up on the way.
