Peony tulips: the case for choosing form over colour

Peony tulip shown closed and then fully open

Peony tulips are the double varieties, carrying many more petals than a standard bloom. Closed, the flower looks like a dense ball. Open, it resembles a small peony, which is where the name comes from.

Botanically these are ordinary tulips with two or three times the usual petal count. The difference is immediately physical: a heavier head, a softer outline, and a colour that reads deeper because so many layers overlap.

How they change in the vase

This is the most dramatic transformation in the genus. A tight bud unfurls over three or four days into a wide cup roughly twice its original diameter.

Two practical points follow from that.

The first concerns quantity. Fifteen double stems occupy the volume of twenty five singles, so the vase needs to be wider than the wrapped bouquet suggests.

The second concerns stage. A bunch of tight buds looks its best on day three, while half open heads peak on day one. For a fixed date, choose deliberately rather than by chance.

The weight of the head

A many petalled head weighs more than a standard one, while the stem stays as soft as any other tulip. So an open flower leans further down.

What helps:

  • A narrow necked vase where the stems brace one another.
  • Shallow water, three to five centimetres, so the stem does not soften.
  • Cold water and a cool position, both of which slow the opening.
  • Trimming every other day if you want to preserve the original height.

Heads tipping over once fully open is the variety behaving normally rather than a sign of decline.

Buy peony tulips closed. One already open in the shop has spent the best part of its life there.

When to choose them

This bouquet suits situations that call for volume and softness: birthdays, spring dates, romantic occasions, a gift for a mother.

Peony tulips are frequently bought as a stand in for actual peonies outside the peony season. The shape is close and both the price and the availability are considerably friendlier.

For professional occasions they work less well, being expressive and distinctly decorative.

For delivery in Samui, ask for a firm collar in the packaging. Multi petalled heads crease under pressure more readily than singles, and a bent outer petal shows immediately.

JFLOO lists peony tulips as their own option within the type section. Buy them in bud and allow extra width in the vase. They open considerably further than they look at the point of purchase.
