New Year gifts: opened in front of everybody

Boxed New Year gift with fir, cones and white roses

Most presents are opened privately. December ones are not, because they come out in a room with other people in it, next to whatever the neighbours and colleagues have already sent, and the first reaction is public. That changes what works. A present needing explanation does badly in that setting.

Flowers do well there because they need no explanation at all.

What they do need is somewhere to go. By the time the guests arrive the table is covered, the windowsill already holds two arrangements from other people, and the household owns two vases. A tall wrapped bouquet in that room gets carried into a bedroom within the hour. A low arrangement on soaked floral foam, in a pot cover or a box, sits between the plates and asks for nothing on the evening it arrives.

Decide where the gift will stand before deciding what goes into it. The answer rules out half the catalogue on its own.

The journey home

A gift handed over at a party rarely stays where it was given. It goes onto a coat pile, then into a taxi, then onto a kitchen counter at one in the morning. Paper with long tails and a wet wrap does not survive that route in any recognisable state, while a closed box does. Preserved roses survive it best of all, since they carry no water and shed nothing on the way. If the recipient is travelling over the holidays, cut stems are the wrong present altogether, and a dried or preserved piece is the one still standing when they get back.

Weight deserves a thought as well. Anything heavier than a couple of kilos becomes a burden the moment its owner also has a coat, a bag and a bottle to carry.

Choosing for one person

A single recipient allows something a batch never does, which is specificity. A flower they once named in conversation is remembered longer than any packaging. For older relatives the safer choice is the one that needs no daily attention, since foam holds for a week where a vase demands cutting and fresh water every morning. Conifer helps the giver in the same way: noble fir keeps its needles far longer than the flowers set into it.

For colleagues, keep the palette neutral and send it early.

Red reads as romance whatever the season, and in an office that reading is rarely the intended one. White, cream and muted green with fir and a little gold are understood the same way by almost everyone. Offices also empty sooner than the calendar admits, so a parcel sent on the last working day tends to meet a closed door.

What the room does to it

Heating shortens a winter gift, not frost. Indoor air in December is drier than any cut flower would choose, and a stem giving ten days in autumn gives four or five above a radiator. Tulips and narcissi are in the shops by then but want cool air, and in a warm room they stretch and lean overnight. That is ordinary behaviour rather than a fault. Moving the arrangement to the coolest room before bed buys back several days, and it is the only piece of aftercare most people will actually do.

Scent belongs at the edge of an arrangement. Hyacinth is worth including for it, and worth being able to lift out when the room turns out to be smaller than the smell.

Demand collapses into a few days at the end of December, and inside that window the stock decides more than the catalogue does. A named variety, an exact shade or a large amaryllis needs asking for a fortnight ahead. Closer in, in Samui as anywhere else, the florist builds from what reached the cold room in time.
