Coffee and toffee roses: the group that hides its own faults
A white rose declares every problem it has. A bruise goes brown, a cold night shows as a translucent patch, a bent petal edge turns grey, and anyone can see it from across a room.
Muted beige and brown cultivars do the opposite, and that is the one genuinely awkward thing about them.
Why damage disappears into the colour
The marks that ageing leaves on a rose are all brownish. On a petal that is already sand, clay or cocoa, a browning edge lands within a step of the natural tone, so a head that is several days past its best still reads as intentional at arm's length.
Handling marks behave the same way. A thumbprint on a pale petal shows as a slightly darker smudge, which on any other colour would be obvious and here simply looks like part of the variety.
None of this makes the flowers worse. It means a quick glance at heads tells you very little, and the check has to move elsewhere.
Where to look instead
Take one stem out of a bunch and go from bottom to top. The cut end should be pale and firm rather than soft or slimy, the leaves should be stiff enough to resist a light bend, and the neck just below the head should not give way when the flower is held sideways.
Then press the base of the head gently with a thumb and forefinger. A fresh rose in this group resists, and a tired one yields with a papery sound.
Two more signs are worth a second: outer petals that curl backwards away from the head, and petal edges that feel dry rather than cool to the touch.
Handling them at home
These cultivars are no more fragile than any other rose, but their surface is unforgiving of contact. Carry the bunch by the stems, not by the wrapping around the heads, and take the paper off rather than pulling the flowers through it.
Water marks are the other thing to avoid. A splash left to dry on a pale petal leaves a visible ring, so mist nothing and fill the vase before the flowers go in rather than after.
Cool water, a fresh angled cut, no fruit bowl in the same room, and a week to two is a fair expectation.

This palette reads as a considered object rather than a celebration, so it goes to people whose taste runs that way: a studio opening, a photographer, an architect, a man who has never been sent flowers, a home full of wood and linen.
Sent to someone hoping for a bright, obvious bunch, coffee roses land as faded, and nobody says so out loud.
When you order, ask when the batch came in rather than which cultivar it is. The first answer tells you far more about this group than the second, and if the flowers are going to someone in Samui who will never think to look at a stem end, that question does the checking on their behalf.
