Gladiolus bouquets: a flower that arrives unfinished
Most bouquets are at their best on the day they are handed over and go downhill from there. A gladiolus spike works the other way round. It comes in with a row of tight green buds and one or two open flowers at the bottom, and it spends the following week opening upwards, a bloom or two a day, until the colour has climbed most of the stem.
That changes how you time an order.
Buying it closed is the point
A spike already open along its whole length has been sitting somewhere for days and has little left to give. The right bunch looks slightly disappointing in the shop, green above and barely coloured below. Send it a day or two before the occasion and the recipient watches it come into flower rather than watching it fade. For a birthday it is one of the few flowers that genuinely rewards arriving early.
The top of the spike is the weak part of that plan. Plants often run out of energy before the last buds open, so the tip stays green and shrivels.
Pinching out the very tip is standard practice and it solves most of that. Take the last centimetre or so between finger and thumb the day the bunch goes into water, and the buds below inherit what would have gone to the top. It looks brutal the first time. The spike keeps a clean line afterwards and finishes the row instead of trailing off into brown. Anyone assembling a bunch professionally will usually have done this already, so check the tips when the flowers arrive.
Why couriers carry them upright
A gladiolus stem grows away from gravity, and it keeps doing so after cutting. Lay a spike flat overnight and the tip curls upwards into a hook by morning. Nothing straightens it out again, which is why these stems travel and wait standing up, and why a long horizontal box is the wrong packaging for them.
The same applies at home. A spike left lying on the kitchen counter while you find a vase will start to bend within hours.
The daily job
Care is undemanding but not quite zero. Change the water every couple of days and re-trim the stem at an angle, because a thick stem clouds the vase faster than a thin one. Strip any leaf that would sit below the waterline. Pick off the spent flowers at the bottom each morning, since they go slimy and drag their neighbours down with them, and this single habit does more for the look of the spike than anything else. Keep the vase away from the fruit bowl as well. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene, and the upper buds respond by dropping before they open.
Where it fits, and where it does not
The spike grows from a corm and comes into its own outdoors in late summer and early autumn, which is when the stems are longest and the choice of colour widest. Glasshouse crops cover the rest of the year at a shorter length. Colours run from white and cream through peach, salmon, pink and scarlet to a purple that is nearly black. Ruffled edges are common in modern varieties and read as fussier than the plain forms.
Height is the deciding factor for the room. Gladiolus bouquets need a tall heavy vase and clear space above it, so they suit a hallway, a hearth or a wide windowless wall far better than a dining table.
One caution about the reading of the flower. In several countries the spike is a fixture of funeral work, so it carries a formal, sometimes sombre association for older recipients. Ask what it means to the person receiving it in Tashkent before sending a large sheaf of them for a celebration.
