Exotic bouquets: built on shape rather than on quantity
Count the stems in a hand-tied bouquet of roses and you can more or less predict how it will look. Count the stems in an exotic bouquet and you learn nothing at all, because three of them can fill a hallway and fifteen can look like a hedge.
The work here is spatial. Each head is placed at its own height and its own angle, the gaps between them are left deliberately, and what the eye reads is the outline against the wall rather than the mass in the middle.
Stiff stems make that possible. They stand where they are put.
What the outline does in a room
A round bouquet reads as a coloured patch from across a room and comes into focus only up close. An asymmetric arrangement of anthuriums, birds of paradise, orchid sprays and protea reads from the doorway, because its silhouette is unusual enough to register before any colour does.
That is also the constraint. The shape needs air around it and a plain surface behind it, so a narrow console against patterned wallpaper will flatten the whole thing. A heavy vase with a narrow neck holds the angles; a wide bowl lets them drift and the composition collapses into a bunch by the second day.
Large leaves are part of the structure and not filler. Monstera, strelitzia foliage and palm cut the background into planes and give the flowers something to sit against, which is why removing them to make the bouquet smaller rarely works.
Who these bouquets are for
They suit people who receive flowers often. Somebody who has been given roses four times this year will look at a sculptural arrangement for a good while longer, simply because the form is not one they already own a photograph of.
They work for openings, for stage and studio deliveries, for a restaurant counter, and as a gift to a man, where the firm texture reads as intent rather than tenderness. They fit an interior with hard finishes, glass and stone, better than a soft domestic one.
They are the wrong answer for a classic romantic anniversary. Red roses carry a meaning that has been agreed on for a century, and a sculptural arrangement, however striking, does not carry it.
Handling and longevity
Tropical cut flowers hold up far longer in a vase than most garden material, and the reason is structural. What looks like a petal on an anthurium or a protea is often a modified leaf or bract, a tissue built for weeks of service, so it fades gradually instead of dropping.
Cold is the one thing that ruins them quickly. A night by an open window or an hour in an unheated boot leaves dark watery patches on the bracts, and those patches never fade. Roses shrug the same treatment off.
Dry moving air is the slower problem: an air conditioning stream pulls water out of a broad leaf faster than the stem can replace it, and the leaf edge curls while the flower still looks perfect.
Change the water every couple of days, recut the stems at an angle, keep the vase away from a fruit bowl. Nothing beyond that is needed.
One practical note on ordering. Stems of this kind arrive as single units rather than by the bunch, so availability moves week to week, and it is worth asking what is actually in the cooler before settling on a particular flower. A courier in Tbilisi will carry the arrangement upright, and it is best received upright too, straight into water rather than laid on a table for the afternoon.
