Large flower baskets: a week of living with one

Large basket of flowers standing against a wall in a hallway

Most descriptions stop at the moment of delivery. The interesting part starts afterwards, because an arrangement this size does not sit quietly in a corner of the recipient's life. It occupies floor, it changes how people walk through a room, and at the end of its run somebody has to deal with it.

The first decision happens soon after the courier leaves.

Finding it a place

Wherever the courier sets it down is rarely where it stays. A floor arrangement is placed against something solid, a wall, a pillar, the side of a cabinet, so that nobody catches it with a bag on the way past. Open floor in the middle of a room looks generous for an hour and becomes an obstacle by the evening.

Height decides the rest. Large baskets sit low and spread wide, so they work beside seating, under a window or in a hallway where a tall vase would be knocked over, and they suit rooms that people cross rather than rooms where people sit close together.

One thing they should never share is a radiator wall.

What the week looks like

Water first. A big block of foam carries a reserve, which is why this format forgives a missed morning, but the reserve only helps if it is actually reaching every part of the base. Pour slowly at the rim in several places rather than in one, since a single pouring point leaves the far corner dry while the near side overflows onto the floor.

Then the flowers themselves, which do not fade evenly. Heads at the outer edge dry first because they sit in the thinnest part of the foam and catch the most air movement, and the centre holds longest. Pulling out the spent ones as they go keeps the silhouette honest, and the gap is closed with a leaf rather than a fresh stem, because the hole left behind no longer holds water.

Taking it apart

This is the part nobody mentions when the arrangement arrives. A large basket does not simply wilt and get carried to a bin the way a bouquet does. The foam is heavy and saturated, the flowers are anchored in it, and the whole thing has to be dismantled where it stands.

Florist dismantling a large flower arrangement and lifting out the foam tray

Lift the flowers out first, then the tray with the foam, and let the block drain before it goes anywhere near a bin bag. Used foam is single-use and does not soak up again to any useful degree.

The frame usually survives all of this in good condition. Willow and rattan baskets outlive their contents by years and end up holding blankets, logs or post, which is a small argument in favour of paying attention to the basket itself and not only to what is planted in it.

When this size is the right answer

Public rooms, mainly. A foyer, a reception, a hall before an event, a stage set where the arrangement has to register from the back row. Detail is invisible at that distance and only the outline carries, which is why large flower baskets are built for silhouette rather than for close inspection.

The second case is a gift from a group, where one substantial object represents everyone better than a row of separate bouquets.

In a small flat the format struggles, and it is worth saying so before ordering. If the recipient in Zurich lives in one room, a lower arrangement on a chest of drawers does the same work and does not spend the week being moved out of the way.
