Occasions in Amsterdam: Friday weddings, Moederdag and the dates between

In 2023 nearly three in ten Dutch weddings took place on a Friday. June, September and May were the three busiest months to marry, at 15, 14 and 12 per cent respectively. The occasions in Amsterdam section follows that same clock for anniversaries, then moves on to family dates — a birthday, a graduation, a new baby — that follow no fixed season at all.

Moederdag on the second Sunday of May, and Easter before it

Moederdag falls on the second Sunday of May, a date the Netherlands has kept since 1925. That means it moves by a week or more from one year to the next, never sitting on a fixed day. The month suits the occasion: the Dutch peony season runs from late April into June, and peonies are at their fullest exactly when Moederdag arrives. Peony Roses Bubbles No. 3 suits the day without needing any explanation on the card.

Easter lands earlier in spring and moves by its own calendar rather than Moederdag's, and it has its own Easter section in the occasions list for anyone choosing flowers around that date instead. On Moederdag itself, orders run far higher than usual, delivery windows widen, and no florist promises an exact minute. Booking a few days ahead keeps a proper choice of slot open. Mother's Day flowers covers the full range for the day.

Many Dutch anniversaries cluster around June and September, with a smaller share landing in May. The custom of marking a twenty-fifth, silver, and fiftieth, golden, anniversary goes back to Germanic lands in the sixteenth century, and both still call for flowers rather than a card alone.

Dutch households read chrysanthemums and white lilies as mourning flowers, not celebration ones, so neither belongs in an anniversary bouquet, whatever its shape. A lily in colour works where the shape is wanted without the association. Roses in cream, peach or blush suit a wedding anniversary at any year, and the same palette works for a golden wedding too.

The days just before Valentijnsdag are the busiest of the year for roses at Royal FloraHolland's auction in Aalsmeer, southwest of the city, long before any bouquet reaches an Amsterdam doorstep. Red stays the obvious choice. Eleven stems arranged as 11 Red French Roses make a size that reads as a proper gesture, no basket needed. The word French here just describes reflexing: the florist's trick of turning each petal back by hand, not a variety of its own.

8 March is less widely known in the Netherlands, so the section is there for those who mark it, not for the city at large. Both dates push delivery windows wider than an ordinary Tuesday, so the earlier an order goes in, the more slots stay open to choose from. Valentine's Day bouquets covers the full range for 14 February.

Results from the Netherlands' central exams land in June, in two rounds: a first round for most students, then a second a little later for anyone resitting a paper. Amsterdam sits in the Noord holiday region, where the summer break begins in the first half of July, leaving only a few weeks between results and the start of the holidays.

Graduation and a plain thank-you cover that same stretch of the calendar, from the first exam results to the last day of term. Teacher's Day shares the same section, for anyone who wants to mark it, without a date tied to this calendar. None of the three needs a reason beyond the occasion itself, and graduation flowers work for any of them. Where the recipient is in hospital instead, what the city's wards and addresses need is worth checking first, since each ward sets its own rule on flowers.

Pakjesavond to an ordinary Tuesday: occasion flower delivery in Amsterdam

Pakjesavond falls on 5 December, Christmas on the 25th and 26th, and Oud en Nieuw is marked on the night running into 1 January: three fixed points close together at the end of the year. Most of the calendar, though, has no date attached at all. A date night, an apology or a card that just says Thinking of You can arrive on any ordinary Tuesday, with no fixed date to plan around. Bouquet with Misty Bubbles and Chamomile is one option built for exactly that kind of occasion.

Occasion flower delivery in Amsterdam works the same way whatever the date. The courier hands the bouquet to the recipient in person with the card attached, knowing only a name and an address, so the card itself can stay unsigned if the sender wants to remain anonymous. A phone number for the recipient is enough where there is no fixed address to give. A photo goes to the sender before the courier leaves, and most orders are delivered the day they are placed, with the exact timing shown on the bouquet's own page. Delivery is free in the centre and priced by zone elsewhere, set out in full under delivery terms by zone.

Birthday is the largest section of occasions in Amsterdam and the simplest place to start when the date is open to any kind of flower. Where the sender would rather stay unnamed altogether, anonymous flower delivery takes care of that from the order form itself: the card can stay unsigned, and the courier does not name the sender.
