Kenyan roses: what to look at when the box is opened

Rose stems being checked one by one after a delivery arrives

Grade is decided long before anyone sees a bouquet. Stems are sorted at the farm by length and head size, packed in bunches, and the person unpacking the box in the shop is the first one who can actually judge the flower rather than the label.

Anyone receiving a delivery can run the same checks in about a minute.

The four things worth touching

Take one stem out and hold it upright by the middle. The neck immediately under the bud should be firm enough that the head stays level; if it tips, the stem has taken in air and the head will fold within a day or two.

Squeeze the bud gently between finger and thumb. A well-grown flower feels solid and springs back, and that firm, tightly wrapped petal is what this origin is known for.

Look at the cut end. Pale and clean is right, a dark rim or any slime means the stem sat too long in water that was not changed.

Then the outer petals. One or two coarse guard petals with a bruised edge are normal and get removed at home, but a brown dry margin running around several layers means the flower was chilled badly or held too long somewhere warm.

Why the supply is so steady

The plantations sit high up almost on the equator. Day length barely changes across the year and the nights stay cool, so the plants crop evenly instead of surging and stalling with the seasons.

For a buyer this shows up in one place: availability during the busy weeks. When demand spikes and seasonal varieties disappear, this is the group that is still coming through in volume.

Cost follows from the same arrangement. Large farms on a short cropping cycle produce more stems per plant than growers pushing for very long heavy stems, and the saving reaches the shelf.

What you get and what you give up

The head is medium and the petal count generous for its size, so a bloom holds its shape under pressure and packs closely against its neighbours. A dense round bouquet built from these has no gaps in it.

The stem is lighter and shorter than a mountain-grown long-stem. Put it in a tall floor vase and the heads sit down at the rim, which looks like a mistake because it is one.

It also opens more readily. That helps when the flowers have to be fully out for a particular evening, and it works against you if they need to hold in tight bud for a week.

First hour at home

Unwrap on arrival rather than in the evening. Roses travel dry, and every extra hour in the sleeve raises the chance of an air lock in the stem.

Recut every stem at a slant, strip the leaves that would sit below the water, and fill the vase deep rather than shallow. Change the water daily for the first three days, and keep the vase away from a radiator or a sunny sill.

Kenyan roses reward that attention more than most, because their firm petal holds up well once the stem is drinking properly. If the recipient in Baku is away for a day, ask for the flowers to be cut tight, and they will open on schedule rather than in an empty room.
