Mono bouquets in Barcelona: stock for height, alstroemeria for weeks

Mono bouquets in Barcelona include separate sections for stock and gladiolus, line flowers that set an arrangement's outline and height, while lilies, gerberas and tulips add weight instead. Choosing a single variety settles three things at once: the shape of the bouquet, how long it lasts in a vase, and whether it suits the person it's for.

Stock and gladiolus: a single variety that draws the outline

Barcelona's mono bouquets catalogue keeps stock and gladiolus in sections of their own, because both are line flowers. In a florist's grammar they draw the outline and set the height of an arrangement, running straight up from the base rather than spreading out. A bouquet made from one of them alone is, in effect, made entirely of that outline: nothing softens it, nothing rounds it off.

Tulips, lilies, gerberas, alstroemeria and sunflowers work the other way round. Each stem usually carries a single bloom, and together they read as mass flowers, the part of a bouquet that gives it weight and a visible centre rather than a silhouette. Baby's breath sits apart again, as a filler normally scattered through other flowers, though taken on its own it makes a cloud rather than a shape.

The choice comes down to two silhouettes. A tall vase calls for the straight line of stock or gladiolus; a low, round vase calls for the mass of tulips, gerberas or lilies filling it out.

Tulips are a mass flower, so one tone of yellow is enough to give the whole bunch its weight.

Two or three weeks in a vase: alstroemeria and orchid, not chrysanthemum

Vase life is where a single-variety choice pays off or doesn't. Alstroemeria and cut orchid both hold for two to three weeks in water, roughly double what a rose manages alone, about a week before the petals drop.

Chrysanthemum lasts just as long, but in Spain it carries a meaning that rules it out as a gift for someone living. In Spain it is taken to cemeteries for Tots Sants on 1 November, not handed to a friend or a partner, a distinction worth knowing before ordering flowers for any other date. Where a chrysanthemum mono bouquet is bought for that day, its leaves turn yellow before the flower does, and a florist strips them off at the start rather than leaving them to spoil the water.

For a bouquet meant to sit on a table for weeks rather than days, alstroemeria or cut orchid are the two kinds built to last, without stock's or gladiolus's insistence on height.

Hydrangea on its own: a few heads, and a basin when one droops

A hydrangea head is large enough that a handful of stems already reads as a full bouquet, which is why a mono bouquet built from hydrangea alone can look dense with far fewer stems than a tulip or gerbera bunch of the same width.

It also drinks more than most other flowers and takes up water through the petals as well as the stem. A hydrangea head that has started to droop isn't past saving: lower the whole head into a basin of cool water for an hour or two, no longer than four or five hours, and it comes back. In Barcelona flats that run air conditioning through July and August, that quick soak matters more than it would in a cooler month.

A wilted hydrangea goes into the water head first: it takes up moisture through the petals as well as the stem.

Each mono bouquet is put together to order, and the florist photographs it before the courier leaves, whatever the variety: a line flower, a mass flower or hydrangea on its own. Mono bouquet delivery in Barcelona covers the zones and the timing. A good place to start is tulips for an easy, long-stemmed mass flower, or stock for a bouquet that leans entirely on height.
