Occasions in Barcelona: an early-May Mother's Day and the dates around it

Of all the occasions in Barcelona, Mother's Day is the one that catches visitors out. Spain keeps it on the first Sunday of May, in the same week as the 1 May holiday and a week before the second Sunday used by the US, Germany and over forty other countries. In this section the Catalan calendar sits alongside family news and no particular reason at all, so the sensible place to start is the date or the news the bouquet is going out for.

Holidays, family news and no reason at all: the three kinds of occasion

These occasions split into three groups, and each asks for a different kind of bouquet. One runs on the calendar: Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Easter, Father's Day, Teacher's Day. Another follows family news as it happens: a birth, a hospital discharge, a christening, a stay in hospital. The third needs no date at all: a dinner, an apology, a thank-you, or a bouquet sent for no reason the sender has to explain.

All Saints Day, 1 November, Tots Sants in Catalan, belongs with the calendar dates but not with a bouquet. Spaniards carry chrysanthemums to the cemetery that day, and the flower stays there rather than going to someone living.

If you mark 8 March by your own tradition, the date fits into the calendar group too, alongside the dates kept locally.

A young woman sits laughing on a low brick ledge outside a converted factory in Poblenou at golden hour, holding a bouquet of pink roses and white lisianthus in her lap with both hands, an old brick chimney and glass offices behind her
The old chimney behind her is what's left of Poblenou's factories, before the area became the 22@ business district.

Easter Monday to the first Sunday in May: Barcelona's spring dates

Good Friday and Easter Monday are both public holidays here, and an Easter bouquet usually reaches a family that's actually at home to receive it. The Easter flowers section covers that week.

Sant Jordi, 23 April, is Catalonia's day of the rose and the book, and the choice for it lives outside this section entirely.

A few days after Sant Jordi comes the 1 May holiday, and Día de la Madre follows within the same week, on the first Sunday of May. A second local holiday, Segona Pasqua, falls later still, at the end of May.

Anyone sending from a country that marks the second Sunday should expect the Spanish date to land a week earlier than the one they're used to.

14 February, 8 March and Mother's Day all bring far more orders than an ordinary week, so bouquets are still made to order rather than kept ready in advance. Placing the order a few days ahead simply leaves more delivery slots open.

A christening or a first week home: flowers for a Barcelona family

Birth of a Child, From the Maternity Hospital and Hospital Discharge all mark the same stretch of a family's week. For any of them, a bouquet sent to the home the parents and baby are going back to works better than one sent to the ward. A christening later on calls for its own bouquet, timed to the day of the ceremony.

Two bouquets in the section suit this stretch by name alone: 11 White and Pink Roses and the Hydrangea and Misty Bouquet.

One thing worth knowing if there's a cat in the house: lilies are poisonous to cats, so they're not the flower to send into one.

A hospital is worth checking before anything is sent at all. Many clinics here don't allow fresh flowers on the ward, and the manager checks the ward's rules before going ahead; the flowers in Barcelona section covers hospital and home delivery alike. A christening calendar of its own sits in the christening section.

Married in September: anniversaries in the week of the Diada and La Mercè

September is Spain's most popular month for weddings, taking some eighteen per cent of the year's total against one to three per cent each for January, February and December. That's a national figure, not a local one, but it still shapes how many anniversaries land in September rather than any other month.

The city keeps two holidays of its own that month: the Diada on the 11th and La Mercè on the 24th. An anniversary that falls in that week often finds the couple at home rather than at work, which makes it a good week to send flowers.

Silver and golden wedding anniversaries both trace back to German-speaking lands as far as the sixteenth century; the golden wedding section is set apart for the fiftieth.

11 Red French Roses takes its name from two things. Red, in the language of flowers, reads as passionate love, though no single agreed list of meanings exists. "French" describes how the florist turns the outer petals back by hand, not a variety of rose.

A date night or an apology: occasion flower delivery in Barcelona

A dinner booked for two is one of the easier occasions in Barcelona to plan around. The florist agrees the timing with the restaurant, and the bouquet arrives with dessert or with the toast, not before.

An apology or a bouquet sent for no particular reason can go with a signed card or an unsigned one. The courier only ever needs a name and an address, nothing about who sent it or why, and the anonymous flower delivery page spells out how that works.

The service itself stays short. A photo of the finished bouquet goes out before the courier leaves, a phone number is enough where there's no fixed address, and most orders are delivered the same day they're placed, with the exact speed shown on the bouquet's own card. Delivery is free in the centre; other districts carry their own zone fee, set out on the delivery terms page.

A date tied to the calendar points toward Mother's Day in May or a wedding anniversary in September, and an evening with no date at all points toward date night.
