Toppers: the part of a gift that carries actual words
Flowers communicate tone. They cannot spell a name or a number. A topper does that job: a short line or a shape on a stick, pushed in among the stems, read instantly and from across a room.
That immediacy is the whole point. A card gets opened later, often when the person who sent it is no longer present. A topper is visible in the first second and, more importantly, in every photograph taken afterwards.
Choose the material for the environment
Card stock is the lightest and cheapest option. It holds up perfectly in a dry hand tied bouquet and turns to pulp within minutes if the stick touches wet foam.
Acrylic ignores both water and handling. Clear acrylic with engraved lettering is the least intrusive choice available, since it adds no new colour to an arrangement somebody has already balanced.
Wood and plywood bring weight and texture. They also pull. A heavy wooden topper needs a dense bouquet underneath it or the whole thing leans.
Foil card photographs brilliantly under a flash and throws glare when a phone is pointed at it against a window. Worth knowing before the picture is the point of the gift.
The stick matters more than the artwork
Almost nobody asks about stick length, and almost every disappointment traces back to it.
1. Too short and the topper sinks into a tall bouquet, ending up level with the wrapping where nothing is legible. 2. Too long and it sways, then rotates edge on during the walk from the car. 3. A single stick supports only a light shape. Wide lettering needs two, otherwise it spins. 4. Sticks pushed into floral foam take up space the stems need, so they go in beside the arrangement rather than into it.
A reliable target: the top edge of the topper should sit about a hand's width above the tallest flower head. High enough to read, low enough not to argue with the flowers.
A topper gets two seconds of attention. Anything that will not fit in two seconds belongs in the card instead.
What works and what quietly fails
Numbers, names and three word congratulations land every time. Long sentences, private jokes and small type disappear between petals, which is a shame given somebody paid for the lettering.
Cake toppers follow the same rules with one addition. Anything touching buttercream should be food safe or sitting on a base, and that is a question to ask before ordering rather than at the table.
