Ranunculus: a short season and a stem that bends
Ranunculus is recognised by the sheer number of tissue thin petals packed into each head. People compare it to a peony and to a garden rose in the same breath, although botanically it is a buttercup.
Two practical facts shape every ranunculus order. It is strictly seasonal, and it is physically fragile. The first decides whether you can buy it at all, the second decides what condition it arrives in.
Why it disappears in summer
Commercial ranunculus runs through the cold half of the year, roughly from late autumn to the end of spring. In summer it is either absent or small and expensive.
That is the plant rather than the supply chain. It flowers in cool conditions and gives up quickly in heat, in the field and in the vase alike. Which is why ranunculus is associated with late winter and early spring occasions and vanishes from catalogues by midsummer.
If a bouquet has to contain ranunculus outside that window, ask about availability well ahead instead of searching the site the night before.
Handling it at home
The stem is hollow, smooth and soft. It bruises when gripped and bows under the weight of a fully open head, which is normal rather than a fault.
- Fill the vase shallow, a couple of centimetres. Deep water softens the stem faster.
- Change that water daily. A soft stem clouds it sooner than a rose does.
- Use a narrow necked vase so the stems brace each other.
- Keep it away from heat. Cool conditions buy about a week, a radiator buys two days.
The flower changes dramatically as it opens. A tight ball becomes a wide shallow cup nearly twice the diameter, and watching that happen is a large part of why people buy it.
Buy ranunculus closed. Once it is fully open it has already shown you everything it has.
Pairings and occasions
A single variety bunch of ranunculus is festive without being loud. It suits spring celebrations, a birthday, a date, or a recipient who knows flowers well enough to appreciate something less predictable than roses.
It sits well with tulips, lisianthus, anemone and light branching foliage. It does badly crammed into a dense mix with large roses, where the thin stem simply loses the physical argument.
For delivery around Cuba, ask for a rigid box or a frame. Ranunculus is not damaged by the journey so much as by pressure inside the packaging, and that is genuinely the only serious risk to it in transit.
