Twenty-five peonies: the first ten seconds at the door
Nobody counts the heads. The recipient sees a mass of petal, works out that it is larger than the usual bouquet, and everything after that is decided by how the flowers were wrapped and how they come out of the paper.
Twenty-five peonies sit at the point where presentation starts doing real work, because the bouquet is now wide enough that bad wrapping shows immediately.
What the wrapping has to do
Paper on a bouquet this size is structural. It holds the dome in the shape the spiral was tied in, keeps the outer heads from catching on doorframes, and gives the courier something to hold that is not the flowers themselves.
Peony petals bruise on contact. A single layer of thin film pressed against the outer heads leaves flat marks by the time the bouquet has crossed a city, and those marks brown within a day. The wrapping should stand slightly proud of the flowers rather than shrink onto them.
Kraft with a soft inner layer is the usual answer. Rigid boxes work too, though a box turns the reveal into an unpacking rather than a moment, and for peonies that is a real loss.
The reveal itself
Watch what people do when they take a large peony bouquet. They tilt it back to see the top of the dome, then bring it towards the face, because the smell arrives about a second after the sight and they want to check it.
Roses do not get that second movement. It is worth building the bouquet so both moments land: the dome even from above, and the scented varieties placed towards the outside of the spiral where a nose can actually reach them.
Then comes the phone.
Almost every bouquet of this size is photographed within the first few minutes, usually against a plain wall or on a kitchen worktop, and usually before the paper comes off. That is why the front face of the wrapping matters more than the back, why a ribbon knot sits on the side the giver hands over, and why anything printed on the paper should be small enough not to compete with the flowers.
Choosing what goes inside
A single colour reads strongest at this count. Twenty-five heads in one shade give a solid block of colour that carries across a room, whereas a mix of three or four shades at this volume tends to look like several smaller bouquets pressed together.
Two close shades work well: pale pink with cream, or coral with white. The eye still reads one object, and the variation stops the dome looking flat under artificial light in the evening.
Greenery is optional and often unnecessary. Peony foliage from the same stems is enough of a frame, and imported leaves added to fill gaps usually mean the heads were mismatched in size.
After the paper comes off
The bouquet needs a container waiting for it, because twenty-five thick stems will not go into whatever narrow vase is on the shelf. A wide neck, a heavy base and plenty of cold water, changed daily, with the stems recut at an angle each time.
Tell the recipient not to hold the bouquet in its paper for long. Peonies out of water go soft quickly and a warm room speeds that up, so the flowers should be in a vase within the hour rather than admired on a table all evening. If the delivery is going to an office in Geneva, ask for a version with its own water supply at the base, since nobody at a reception desk wants to be responsible for finding a bucket.
