Corporate bouquets: flowers that say the right amount

Every bouquet sent between colleagues carries a message, and at work the risk is not saying too little. It is saying more than the relationship supports. A dense armful of red roses on a retirement day, or scented lilies sent to a client who has never met you in person, lands as an overstatement, and the recipient spends the afternoon explaining it to people who walk past their desk.

The professional register is narrower and easier to hit than it looks. Restraint reads as respect; abundance reads as familiarity.

That is the whole reasoning behind the neutral palette. White, cream, soft green, dusty pink and pale peach carry no second meaning in any office, and they survive whatever backdrop the room provides.

Colour, and why red is the wrong tool

Backdrops in corporate settings are unpredictable. A branded banner, a blue conference wall, cold overhead lighting: a bouquet built from five strong shades will argue with at least one of them, and photographs of the moment stay on a company account for years.

Two approaches hold up. A single flower in a single tone, where the interest comes from density and shape rather than contrast; or two adjacent shades half a step apart with textural foliage between them.

Matching the company's brand colours is sensible when those colours are soft. When they are a saturated blue or a sharp orange, the only way to reach them in fresh flowers is dyed chrysanthemum, and the result looks cheaper than the logo it was meant to echo.

Shape you can read across a room

The geometry is deliberately controlled. A clean dome or a clear vertical, an even edge, heads sitting at a consistent height. A loose garden-style build, where half the charm comes from stems escaping at odd angles, reads as untidy at a distance of ten metres, because an audience sees the outline and never the detail.

There is a mechanical side too. Whoever receives it will be holding a folder, a certificate or someone else's hand, so the bouquet has to be liftable with one hand at the middle. Stems bound tightly, ribbon where the palm lands, nothing trailing in loops.

Length is worth checking as well. A bouquet taller than the person carrying it turns into a management problem the moment they walk back to their seat.

Scent, which nobody thinks about until the meeting

At home the smell of lilies is part of the point. In a closed meeting room with eight people and two hours of agenda, it becomes something else, and the odds are good that one of the eight reacts badly to it.

So the reliable stems here are the quiet ones: roses of neutral varieties, chrysanthemum, lisianthus, carnation, orchid. If lilies do go in, the pollen is removed before handover, since it stains a shirt and a jacket permanently.

The same logic applies at a dinner. Strong fragrance next to plated food competes with the wine, and guests notice it as an obstacle rather than a pleasure.

Where it goes afterwards

Think past the applause. The bouquet travels in a car, then to a reception counter or a desk, and in most offices there is no vase and no one whose job it is to find one.

A hat box with floral foam, or stems in water tubes, removes that problem completely. It can stand on a boardroom table for a week and needs nothing from anyone in the building.

If your recipient in London works with partners from other countries, keep the composition plain. Cream and white carry the same meaning almost everywhere, while yellow blooms and even-numbered stems mean different things in different places, and a corporate bouquet is not the moment to test which.
