Designer-styled bouquets: what happens after the wrapping comes off

A composed arrangement is photographed on a plain background, held at arm's length, seen from one angle. Then it goes into a real room with wallpaper, shelves, a television and a fruit bowl, and half of what made it work in the photograph stops working.

That gap is worth planning for before the order, not after the delivery.

The vase problem

Ordinary bouquets are forgiving about containers. A structured one is not, because its outline is the point, and the wrong vessel destroys the outline in a second.

A tall narrow silhouette wants a straight-sided vase roughly half its height, in clear glass or plain ceramic. A low dome wants a wide bowl with a short neck, otherwise the heads splay out and the curve flattens. A one-sided fan needs to stand against something, since the back of it was never built to be seen.

Cut glass, painted patterns and coloured vessels compete with the arrangement rather than supporting it, which is why florists keep coming back to plain cylinders.

Where it should stand

Empty space around the arrangement is part of the design. A shelf crowded with photo frames, candles and small objects breaks the outline into fragments, and all the discipline that went into building it disappears.

Give it a console, an empty end of a sideboard, or a low table with nothing else on it.

Light matters almost as much. A restricted palette relies on the difference between textures, and flat overhead lighting erases those differences, whereas light coming from one side puts shadows between the layers and brings the shape back. A corner with a lamp does more for this kind of arrangement than the middle of a bright room.

Keeping the shape as it ages

Composed work changes as it opens, and it changes unevenly. A rose that opens fully grows by a third and pushes out past the outline it was built to sit inside.

Two habits keep the form. Recut the stems to the same length each time rather than trimming a couple, and pull out any bloom that has finished instead of leaving it in place, because one collapsed head in a tight structure is visible from across the room.

Dried and structural elements stay put and can be kept once the fresh flowers are gone, which is why some of these arrangements are built with an afterlife in mind.

When to choose something else

The format suits an opening, a launch, a photograph, an office reception, or a recipient whose home you have seen and know to be spare.

It suits large family gatherings much less. Guests read volume as generosity, and a precisely built arrangement of nine stems will be received as a modest gift next to an armful of the same value.

Designer-styled bouquets also travel less easily than loose ones, so if the delivery crosses Munich in traffic, ask for the structure to be tied at the binding point and boxed upright. A composed arrangement that has been laid flat in a van arrives as an ordinary bunch, and no amount of adjusting at the door puts the shape back.
