Irises are bought closed and opened at home
Cut irises look wrong in a shop. What sits in the bucket is a tight elongated bud shaped like a rolled cigar, with no visible hint of the flower inside it. It unfurls at home, usually within a day and sometimes within hours in a warm room.
That is why judging irises on the shelf makes no sense. An iris already open in the shop has spent its first day there rather than with the person receiving it.
Where the vase life comes from
An individual iris flower is short lived, three or four days. The bunch runs longer because of the reserve bud: most stems carry a second one that opens after the first has finished.
Which suggests a small habit. Pull the spent flower off the stem carefully without cutting the stem itself, and the second bud gets its turn.
Care is otherwise standard, with two adjustments. Keep the water shallow, about a third of the vase, since the fleshy stem softens if left deep. Cool conditions extend the display noticeably, and a warm room halves it.
Colour and varieties
Blue and violet are the default, though the range runs wider.
1. Deep blue and purple varieties, the ones everybody pictures. 2. White with a yellow signal, quiet enough for formal arrangements. 3. Yellow, uncommon in cut form and considerably louder than the rest. 4. Bicolours, where the upright petals differ in tone from the falls.
The pigment in dark varieties is strong. A crushed petal marks pale fabric and tablecloths, so spent flowers are worth removing promptly rather than waiting for them to drop on their own.
Irises are bought for their shape rather than their longevity. This is a flower for people who care about silhouette.
Pairings and recipients
A single variety iris bunch is graphic. Fifteen or twenty one stems packed tightly give one clear block of colour, while a scattered seven look accidental in a wide vase.
Irises sit well with tulips, daffodils and mimosa, which is to say with the rest of the spring group. Roses are a poorer match, since the texture and the rhythm of the two are at odds.
The bouquet suits spring occasions, men, colleagues, teachers, and anyone with restrained taste. There is no romantic implication attached to an iris, and that widens the list of occasions considerably.
For a delivery in Munich, ask for loose packaging. A closed bud snaps at its base easily, and a tight cone does irises more harm than the journey ever will.
