Dianthus: the carnation people stopped recognising

Close view of dusty pink and terracotta dianthus heads

Dianthus is the botanical name for carnation, and in flower catalogues it has attached itself to the modern varieties, which look very little like the carnation of school prize days. Dense many petalled heads, muted colours, spray forms carrying several flowers per stem.

Part of that renaming is practical and part of it is reputational. The word carnation carries baggage in several countries, and the flower itself has done nothing to earn it.

The case for it

Dianthus sits among the most durable cut flowers available. Two weeks in a vase is ordinary, cool conditions extend that, and none of it requires any particular skill from the recipient.

Colour is the second argument. Current varieties produce shades that barely exist elsewhere in the flower trade: dusty rose, terracotta, green, deep burgundy with a pale edge, and two tone gradients inside a single head.

Price is the third. For equivalent volume, dianthus costs meaningfully less than roses while the dense head does much the same visual work.

Vase habits

Care is simple, with one detail that gets missed regularly.

  • Cut between the nodes rather than across one. A stem cut at the node takes up almost no water.
  • Keep the water shallow, a third of the vase is plenty.
  • Strip the lower leaves, which are soft and spoil water quickly.
  • Keep the bunch away from ripening fruit. Dianthus is ethylene sensitive and ages fast around it.

Standard and spray types are bought differently. Standards are counted as single stems, and seven or nine make a formal bouquet. Sprays are counted as branches, and five branches are already a complete gift.

Dianthus loses to the rose on recognition and beats it on endurance. By day ten that argument has settled itself.

Where the symbolism still matters

In Russia and neighbouring countries the red carnation belongs to remembrance days and war memorials. That association attaches specifically to the classic red single headed form.

Spray varieties, pastels and bicolours read completely differently and carry none of it. They go into birthdays, gifts between friends, interior arrangements and wedding work without any second reading.

If flowers are going to an older recipient in Ras Al Khaimah, a coloured spray form or a mixed arrangement removes the ambiguity that a red single variety bunch might introduce.

JFLOO lists dianthus as its own category and uses it inside mixed bouquets. This is a flower worth reassessing: the range of varieties has changed considerably more over recent years than its reputation has.
