Seasonal bestsellers: a shortlist that changes under you

Buckets of freshly delivered peonies at the start of the season

A catalogue is a promise that something can be made again tomorrow. This section is the opposite kind of list: it holds whatever is arriving in volume right now, and its contents are rewritten by the delivery van rather than by anyone in the office.

Use it as a timing tool. That is the whole trick.

Windows, and why they close

Every crop has a period when it comes in properly. Some windows are generous and drift across a couple of months, others are counted in weeks, and the narrow ones close faster than most buyers expect.

Peonies, lily of the valley and the first lilac are the short ones. They appear, they dominate for a few weeks, and then the buckets are simply empty until the following year, no matter what anybody is willing to pay.

Tulips run in a longer wave. Chrysanthemums and carnations barely have a window at all, which is exactly why they rarely appear in a seasonal shortlist: a flower that is always here is never news.

What matters practically is where in the window you are ordering. Early in a wave the stems are thick and the heads reach full size; late in the same wave the crop is thinning, the stems come slimmer, and the difference between the first week and the last is larger than the difference between two neighbouring varieties.

Planning a date around a flower

If someone has a favourite flower, the useful question to ask a florist is not whether it is available but when its window opens. A birthday in the middle of a peak is a different bouquet from the same birthday three weeks later, at the same price.

Where the date cannot move, move the order instead. Bringing a delivery forward by two days at the end of a window often means full-sized heads rather than small ones, and nobody minds flowers arriving early.

For a wedding or an event, a seasonal shortlist is a starting point rather than a plan. Build the palette around what is at peak in that month and keep one substitute agreed in advance, because a narrow window can shift with the weather.

Volume, price and the thing people get wrong

Seasonal hand-tied bouquet being wrapped on a workbench

A flower reaches this section when it arrives in quantity, and quantity is what makes a large arrangement affordable. The same money buys a full hand-tied bouquet of a crop at peak or a handful of stems of the same crop out of season, and that gap is supply rather than markup.

The common mistake is treating the section as a discount shelf. It is not: it is a report on what the growers are cutting, and the prices simply follow from that.

The second mistake is loyalty to a photograph. People find an arrangement they liked, come back for it in the autumn and are surprised it has gone, when what has actually gone is the crop it was built from.

A florist can always propose a close equivalent for the recipient in Ras Al Khaimah, matching colour and density with a different flower, and the honest version of that conversation happens before assembly rather than after delivery.

Worth opening this section before every order, even a confident one. Something in it will be unavailable by next month and absent for the rest of the year.
