Alstroemeria: rarely requested by name, usually the last one standing
Almost nobody walks into a florist and asks for alstroemeria. People recognise it, call it a Peruvian lily or a miniature lily, and are surprised to learn it routinely outlasts everything else in the same vase.
The structure explains the value. Each stem ends in an umbel carrying several flowers, so volume builds quickly without a high stem count. That is why it turns up whenever somebody needs a generous looking bouquet on a modest budget.
Where the two week vase life comes from
Fourteen days is unremarkable for alstroemeria, and cool conditions with fresh water push it further. The umbel does the work: as the first flowers finish, the neighbouring buds are only starting.
One habit protects that lifespan, and skipping it halves the result. The foliage is thin and yellows well before the flowers do. Strip it from the lower stem at the moment the bouquet goes into water rather than waiting for it to rot below the waterline.
There is a handling note too. Prolonged contact with the sap irritates some people's skin, which is why florists wear gloves through a large delivery. A household bouquet is not a concern, but it is worth knowing why the shop does it.
What a single variety bunch looks like
The speckling on the petals is a varietal trait, not a blemish. Some cultivars are heavily marked, others almost plain, and on a shop shelf the two can look like unrelated flowers.
