Bouquets with flowers in Vancouver: choosing the flower before the occasion

Bouquets with flowers in Vancouver are sorted by species, and two of those species carry people's names: gerbera after the botanist Traugott Gerber, who died in 1743, and alstroemeria after Clas Alströmer, a pupil of Linnaeus. Choosing a flower here means choosing its season, its vase life and the care it needs once it is home.

Choosing a bouquet by the flower, not the occasion

Every flower in the section plays one of three roles in a bouquet. Mass flowers carry the weight and sit at the centre, usually one bloom per stem: rose, gerbera, lily, chrysanthemum, tulip, alstroemeria and sunflower all work this way. Line flowers, such as stock, known here as matthiola, and gladiolus, set the outline and the height. Gypsophila is the filler, packed into the gaps between the larger stems.

A single-species bouquet shows one flower on its own, nothing else competing for attention. A pairing such as the Lily and Gerbera Bouquet or the Hydrangea and Misty Bouquet works differently: one flower holds the centre, the other fills around it.

Peony-shaped roses are usually David Austin varieties, bred in England for that dense, many-petalled head, and the section keeps them in a collection of their own next to the peonies. A "French" rose is not a variety at all. It is a technique: the florist turns the outer petals back by hand until the flower opens wider than it would on its own.

Each bunch on the table holds one kind of flower, the way the collections in this section are sorted.

In the northern hemisphere, spring belongs to the bulb flowers: tulip, daffodil and hyacinth, alongside ranunculus. Lilac follows in May. Summer brings peonies, then hydrangea and sunflower, and chrysanthemum takes over in autumn. Mimosa has its own short window, flowering from January to March.

A handful of flowers skip the calendar entirely because they grow in greenhouses year-round: chrysanthemum, gerbera, alstroemeria, lily, lisianthus and carnation all sit in the catalogue every month. Peony is the one exception worth a word of its own: cutting runs across nearly the whole year between different growing regions, just never quite the whole year at once, which is why the bouquet is not always available. For a spring order, tulips are the safer bet.

Which bouquet flowers last longest in a vase

Chrysanthemums, dianthus, alstroemeria and cut orchids are the section's long stayers, holding for two to three weeks. On chrysanthemums the lower leaves yellow before the flower does, so a florist strips them off rather than leaving them to spoil the water.

Roses sit in the middle of the range: about a week as a rule, sometimes closer to ten days with a fresh cut and clean water. A peony arrives still closed, tight as a bud, and opens over five to seven days before it is done.

Lilies, daffodils, tulips, hydrangeas: flowers with house rules

A few flowers in the section need handling of their own once they are out of the box:

  • Lily. Every part is toxic to cats, including the water left standing in the vase, so a lily bouquet is not the right gift for a house with one. Once a flower opens, the orange anthers are removed; any pollen that lands on fabric lifts off with sticky tape, never with rubbing.
  • Daffodils stand a full day in water on their own first. Only after that do they join other flowers in the same vase, and without a fresh cut.
  • Tulip wants cold water and a vase filled to about a third, turned a quarter-turn each day so the stems don't all lean the same way. A tulip keeps growing after the cut, which is part of why it needs the room.
  • Hydrangea drinks more than most cut flowers. If a head droops, it goes under cool water for an hour or two and comes back on its own.

Every bouquet is put together to order, and the flowers themselves are bought only after payment goes through. Before the courier sets out, a photo of the finished bouquet is sent over, and that is the moment to ask for anything to be changed. If a particular flower isn't in stock that day, the florist swaps in one close in both colour and price, and the substitution is visible in the same photo. The card that goes with the bouquet is free, and there's no need to sign it if the sender would rather stay anonymous.

Delivery to the centre costs nothing, and the timing for any given bouquet is shown on its own listing rather than promised in general, since it varies by flower and by stock. Most orders reach the recipient on the day they're placed. Full zones and terms are on the delivery details page.

A bouquet that needs to last through a slow week points towards the long stayers described above. One meant for spring points to the bulb flowers instead. For a colleague or a friend, where the flower itself matters less than the gesture, gerberas make an easy, cheerful place to start looking.
