Mono bouquets in Vancouver: one variety, timed to the Fraser Valley year

Lakeland Flowers in Abbotsford grows more than 70 tulip varieties across 27 acres, yet mono bouquets in Vancouver take just one. Choosing a single variety starts with two questions: is the flower in season here, and who is it for?

Tulips in a Fraser Valley April, and greenhouse ones before it

The tulip fields in Abbotsford bloom from April into early or mid May, and the exact week depends on the weather rather than the calendar. Lakeland Flowers alone works 27 acres there with more than 70 varieties, part of a wider Fraser Valley that supplies cut flowers across Vancouver and western Canada, with tulips field-grown outdoors.

Outside that stretch, a single-variety tulip bunch still comes from a greenhouse. Dutch bulbs are chilled through an artificial winter before being forced under glass, which keeps tulips in cut flower supply from December to May, so an order placed in February is this kind of tulip rather than a field-grown one. Do not treat a tulip mono bouquet as a promise of local stems. The same spring weeks that colour the tulip fields also bring Vancouver's cherry blossom season, with the city's festival running from late March into April.

Single-variety tulips are one of the steadier choices among mono bouquets in Vancouver, since a greenhouse keeps the flower in supply well beyond its field season.

One variety in one colour: nothing in the bunch competes with the tulips.

Narcissus in spring, hydrangea in summer, lilies the whole year

Narcissus and sunflowers grow outdoors in the Fraser Valley fields, while orchids are raised under glass; each has its own page in the catalogue, so a florist simply calls them by name. Narcissus is a spring flower here. Cut narcissus stems release sap that shortens the life of other flowers sharing their water. A florist keeps a fresh bunch on its own for about a day before adding it to a mixed vase, and leaves the stems uncut from that point on.

Hydrangea and sunflowers are summer flowers. A hydrangea head is large enough that a handful of stems already makes a full bouquet, which is why a bunch of pink hydrangea needs nothing else to fill it out. Hydrangea also drinks faster than most cut flowers and takes up water through its petals as well as its stem, so a head that has gone soft is lowered into cool water for an hour or two, never longer than four or five hours.

Chrysanthemum, gerbera, alstroemeria, lily, lisianthus and carnation are greenhouse flowers and stay in supply all year; alstroemeria and chrysanthemum also last longest in a vase, two to three weeks. Lilies are not a safe gift for a home with a cat. Vancouver's wet winters and the dry, heated air inside flats are covered on the rainy months and dry flats.

A wilted hydrangea goes into the water head first: it takes up moisture through the petals as well as the stem.

Chrysanthemums: longevity in colour, mourning in white

In Chinese tradition the chrysanthemum stands for long life, and colour carries most of the meaning: white flowers mean mourning there and are not given as a gift. Chinese residents make up close to a quarter of Vancouver's population, according to the 2021 census. The number four is avoided because it sounds like the word for death, so a florist will not build a bouquet in a count of four stems for such a household. A count such as nine, as in a bunch of nine ranunculus, carries no such weight.

Canadian funeral custom runs the other way round: chrysanthemums, white lilies and carnations, sold here as dianthus, are the flowers associated with mourning, kept to calm whites and pastels. Funeral flowers go to the funeral home, while condolence flowers for the family go to the house. Chrysanthemums are available as a single-variety bunch in white and in colour.

Every one of the mono bouquets in Vancouver is put together to order once payment clears, and a photo goes to the sender before the courier leaves; most orders reach the recipient the same day they are placed. Exact timing is shown on each bouquet's own page, and the delivery terms cover the rest. Tulips make the most sense in spring, hydrangea in summer, and chrysanthemums work in white or in colour any month of the year.
