Peony delivery in Vancouver: varieties, the local BC season and the "marshmallow" bud rule

The peony suits Vancouver's taste and climate remarkably well. Full, fragrant, lavish without being showy, it works equally for a wedding on Vancouver Island and a quiet home bouquet in Kitsilano. British Columbia's cool coastal summer is good for the peony: it dislikes heat, and the local climate stretches the flowering. As a result there are plenty of local fields here, and in June and July the bouquet holds a peony grown just down the road.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed compositions with roses and eucalyptus, hat boxes and large baskets for celebrations. In season, supply comes from fields in British Columbia and on Vancouver Island; off-season, from Chilean, New Zealand and Alaskan plantations. That keeps the peony in the catalogue almost year-round.

Key varieties in the catalogue

Each peony variety has its own job — from a wedding arch to an intimate "thinking of you." They differ in bud shape, shade, scent and vase life.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — a pastel-pink double bud up to 18 cm, with a honeyed scent and a note of vanilla. A 1906 classic that works in any context: weddings, birthdays, a business gift.
  • Coral Charm — shifts from coral-orange as it opens to a creamy peach in full bloom. One of the most sought-after varieties of recent years.
  • Karl Rosenfield — a dense, deep-red peony with saturated colour. Sits well in autumn and winter interiors with warm, wine-toned accents.
  • Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson "fleck" at the heart. One of the most photogenic varieties, a favourite of wedding photographers.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a cream centre and a light vanilla scent. For refined romance and nude palettes.
  • Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross between herbaceous and tree peony. Larger and longer-flowering, lasting 10–12 days in the vase. For premium gifts and wedding design.

Cut stage and why it matters

The golden rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage: a coloured bud that is still soft to the touch — squeeze it and it springs back like a marshmallow. Such a bud opens in one to two days and lasts 7–9 days. A hard, green one may not open at all; a fully open one will hold for two to three days at most.

Every batch of ours is hand-sorted by this criterion: only "marshmallow" buds go out for shipping. For a recipient in Vancouver that means the full flowering cycle, not the final fading stage.

Seasonality and logistics

The natural peony season in British Columbia is late June and July; the cool coast pushes flowering a couple of weeks later than on the continental mainland. During this window the bouquet uses local field peonies — the freshest and best value. From August to May, supply comes from the southern hemisphere (Chile, New Zealand) and late Alaskan batches — the cost is 1.5 to 2 times higher, but quality and vase life do not suffer.

For weddings and anniversaries we coordinate the delivery date with the expected moment of opening. A peony at a celebration should greet the guests in full bloom, not as a closed bud — and that takes precise timing. Imported batches fly in through YVR airport and pass through an unbroken cold chain.

"A peony isn't a flower for an impulse buy. In summer I take local — from the Fraser Valley or Vancouver Island — it reaches us in a day and lasts longer. If you want a striking wedding, order three or four days ahead and let the bud open at the recipient's home."

Delivery specifics in Vancouver

Vancouver has an oceanic climate: a mild, rainy winter around +3 to +7 °C, a warm, dry summer of +18 to +23 °C, and plenty of rainfall in the cold season. For the peony that is a plus — it dislikes heat, and the coastal cool extends the flowering. In the wet season we shield bouquets from moisture with the wrapping; in summer cooling inserts are rarely needed. The best season for peonies is May to July.

We deliver peonies across all districts of Vancouver: Downtown, West End, Yaletown, Coal Harbour, Gastown, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Fairview, Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale, Point Grey, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Richmond and Burnaby. Payment is in Canadian dollars (C$, CAD). Peak dates: Mother's Day (the second Sunday of May), Valentine's Day (14 February), Easter and the late-spring and summer wedding season. Peonies sell out especially fast for Mother's Day — order 7–10 days ahead.

Home care

On arrival, re-cut the stems at 45°, strip the leaves below the waterline and place in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every two days. Keep away from fruit, radiators and direct sun — ethylene and heat halve a peony's life.

In a damp Vancouver flat a peony needs not only coolness but ventilation: stagnant humid air speeds up petal spoilage. Keep the bouquet in the coolest part of the home, ideally near a window. Fragrant varieties (Sarah Bernhardt, Duchesse de Nemours) open best at a moderate +18 to +20 °C — the scent becomes clearer and more lasting.
