Peonies in a box: the first thirty seconds
The lid comes off in front of you, and that is the whole design. A box is built to be looked into from above, at close range, by somebody standing over it, and the way it is packed serves that one moment.
What they see is a field of heads at a single level. No stems, no water, no visible mechanics, just closed balls of petal set edge to edge inside a rim. It reads as more flowers than the same number would in wrapping, because nothing is spread out and nothing is diluted with greenery. That density is the format's whole argument.
Then comes the second reaction, and it is often disappointment.
Peonies are cut and shipped as hard balls, so a box delivered outside the local season arrives closed, and a closed bud looks nothing like the photograph that sold it. This is the correct state. Warmth is what opens it, and a box left in a warm room will unfold over a day or two, sometimes overnight. The one bud that never opens is the one that feels like a stone and gives nothing under light pressure, cut too early in the field. Everything else simply needs time and a radiator somewhere in the same room.
Why the arrangement looks loose at first
An open peony head is about three times the width of the ball it came from. A florist who fills every gap on the day of assembly builds something that destroys itself by the third day, with neighbouring heads pressing bruises into each other. So a well-built box has visible space between the flowers when it arrives and closes into a solid dome as the buds go.
Judge it after two days rather than on the doorstep. The first look is the one the format is designed for, and also the least informative.
Travel, and where it ends up
Boxes travel better than any other format for these flowers. Every stem is fixed in wet foam, so nothing swings, nothing rubs and nothing has to stand upright in the footwell of a car. The rim protects the outer heads from knocks at the sides. A courier carries it flat in one hand and hands it over without unwrapping anything.
At the other end it needs no equipment.
Hospital wards, hotel rooms and office desks are the usual destinations for exactly that reason, since none of them reliably contains a vase. The box is low enough to sit between two people at a table without blocking the view. It also suits a recipient who is not especially interested in flowers, because there is nothing for them to do.
There is a price for all of that. Short stems cannot be moved into a vase later, so the gift lasts as long as the arrangement lasts and not a day longer.
Keeping it going
Water goes in at the edge, in a thin stream, until the top of the foam stops taking it. The layer of foam in a box is shallow and peonies drink hard, so this is a daily job rather than a weekly one. Do not pour over the heads, since water trapped between petals turns them brown at the edges. Watch the cardboard too, because a soaked rim loses its shape from the inside and the shell begins to sag. Faded heads should be lifted out as they go, and the gap covered with a leaf rather than refilled.
Peonies shed all at once rather than fading slowly, usually across a single afternoon. Inside a closed field of heads that happens out of sight until the petals are already on the table.
Ants on the buds are worth a sentence, since they alarm people. They come for the nectar on the outside of the closed bud, they do no harm, and their presence means field-grown stems. A box sent to a recipient in Warsaw in the local season is far more likely to show them than an imported one, and it is usually the better flower.
