Flowers in a small bag: the size of the gesture
Half the awkward moments involving flowers come from sending too many of them. An armful arriving at a desk announces itself to the whole floor, obliges the recipient to explain, and turns a small kindness into an event nobody asked for.
A bag-shaped arrangement is the answer to that specific problem. It is deliberately modest, it sits within the footprint of a coffee cup and saucer, and it can be handed over without a word of explanation from either side.
When the smaller thing is the right thing
Somebody you work with, on a day that matters to them and to nobody else. A neighbour who fed the cat. A teacher at the end of term, who is likely to be carrying several of these already and would rather not carry a fifth armful home on foot.
Thanks after an interview, a viewing, a treatment, a lesson. The register here is professional, and a large red bouquet reads as something quite different.
There is also the practical case: a recipient with a very small flat. People who have run out of surfaces stop enjoying big arrangements, and a bag takes a shelf edge rather than a table.
What actually fits
Less than the outline suggests, since the walls are rigid and a liner takes up part of the width. Short dense heads are what the shape wants: spray roses, carnations, ranunculus, lisianthus, chrysanthemum, small seasonal bulbs.
Tall flowers are the mistake to avoid. A gladiolus or a long lily cut down to a low rim looks amputated rather than arranged.
Because there are few stems, each one is visible. A weak head hides easily in an armful and hides nowhere here, which is why a florist building one of these will reject blooms that would pass without comment in a larger piece.
Water, in a shallow bed
The foam block in a small bag is thin, and it evaporates at much the same rate as a large one, so it runs dry sooner than any other box format. A thin stream at the rim every morning is the routine, and in a warm room it may want a second top-up in the evening.
Once the foam has dried through, water will not bring it back.
Pull spent heads out as they go. In a small arrangement a single drooping stem spoils the whole object, whereas in a large one it goes unnoticed for days.
Handing it over
The handles change the transfer. It passes from one hand to one hand, the way any bag does, and neither person has to work out where to hold it, which is what makes it usable on a stairwell, in a lift or at a reception counter.
It also stands upright the whole way, so a courier in Singapore never has to lay it flat or wrap a cone around it. What it will not do is impress a room, and when the occasion genuinely calls for scale, a bag is the wrong tool and everyone can tell.
