Vases and candles: the add-ons that change how the flowers look at home

Glass and ceramic vases of different shapes lined up on a pale table

Sections like this one read as afterthoughts, a shelf of small extras next to the real purchase. Two of the items here are not extras at all. A vase does more to the shape of a bouquet than any wrapping, and a candle decides the light the bouquet is seen in after dark.

Both are chosen against a specific bouquet. Chosen in the abstract, they usually end up in a cupboard.

Buy the neck, not the height

The opening is the measurement that matters. Stems need room to stand without splaying, and a neck that is too wide turns a tightly built bouquet into a loose fan the moment it goes in. A neck that is too tight pinches the stems and slows how much water they take up.

Proportion is second. A workable rule is a vase roughly half the height of the finished bouquet. At that ratio the arrangement neither drowns nor tips forward.

Stability is third and gets forgotten. Large bouquets with woody stems are heavy and catch the air when carried. They want weight in the base, or the vase will slide across a table at the first knock.

  • Narrow cylinder. For a single stem or a slim single variety bouquet.
  • Wide and low. For short dense arrangements and peonies.
  • Classic tapered shape. The general purpose option, holds a medium bouquet without tying.
  • Opaque ceramic. Hides stems and cloudy water, useful where nobody rinses the vase daily.

Candles next to flowers

Scented candles and fragrant flowers compete. If the bouquet includes lilies, freesia or lisianthus, an unscented candle is the safer purchase, otherwise the room ends up with a blend nobody chose.

There is a physical side too. Heat opens buds faster and dries petal edges, so a burning candle should not sit against the vase. A hand's width of separation is enough.

A candle too precious to light is an ornament, not a gift. If an ornament is what you want, a vase is the honest version of it.

Candle burning in a glass tumbler beside a small bouquet on a table

For sending, a candle in a glass or a tin travels better than a pillar. It will not run across a table, it can be capped out instead of blown out, and nothing needs scrubbing afterwards.

Putting the set together

The test for an add-on is whether it solves something. A vase earns its place when the bouquet is large and the recipient may not own one that size. A candle earns its place when the gift is aimed at an evening rather than a desk.

Weight is worth a thought when a set is going out across Tokyo. A glass vase, water and a full bouquet together are heavier than the product photos suggest, and all of it arrives in one pair of hands.

JFLOO keeps candles and vases in a separate section so they can be matched to a particular bouquet instead of guessed at. Choose the flowers first, then the neck of the vase. Doing it the other way round almost never fits.
