Flowers for a child worldwide: short stems and bouquets that last

The grid's 11 Kenyan French Roses come from farms around Lake Naivasha, where stems usually grow shorter than Ecuadorian ones — a length that fits a child's hands. Choosing flowers for a child worldwide starts with that kind of fit: size first, then how many days the bouquet holds up in a child's room.

Choosing flowers a child can hold

A short stem only answers half the question; the other half is how full the bunch looks once it is in a small hand. The grid lists several mono bouquets sized by stem count: 11 and 25 Lavender Spray Roses, 5 Pink Chrysanthemums and a Bouquet of 5 Sunflowers.

Large-headed flowers need very few stems to read as a bouquet, so five sunflowers already fill a hand on their own. Small-flowered stems work the other way round, and a dense, rounded head of them usually starts from around two dozen. Where the child already has a favourite flower, that is the simplest place to begin looking.

A rose usually holds for about a week, sometimes closer to ten days. Chrysanthemums, dianthus and a cut orchid tend to go on longer, two to three weeks in a vase, which is what the grid's 15 Dianthus, 5 Pink Chrysanthemums and Orchid Bouquet No. 1 all draw on.

Chrysanthemum leaves yellow before the flower itself does; pull them off and the bloom carries on regardless. A little upkeep stretches any of these further: recut the stems at an angle, change the water every day or two, and keep the vase away from a radiator, direct sun and ripe fruit.

Adding a toy, sweets or a card to the bouquet

A card with a written message costs nothing extra, and balloons, sweets, a soft toy and a vase are added at checkout alongside the bouquet itself. The teddy bear has a small history behind its name: it comes from President Roosevelt, in November 1902, and Steiff released its own version in Germany that same year.

A helium balloon behaves differently depending on what it is made of. A latex one stays afloat for about half a day, while a foil balloon lasts several days.

Flower delivery for a child worldwide as a surprise

Nobody calls the recipient ahead of delivery unless the sender asks for it; the one exception is a building the courier cannot enter unannounced, where a call from the door replaces the doorbell. The courier works from a name and an address alone, and the card can carry a signature or stay anonymous.

Before the courier sets off, a photo of the finished bouquet goes to the sender, and any correction is made while there is still time, before dispatch. No address on hand is not a problem either, since a phone number is enough for the courier to reach the recipient. Most orders go out on the day they are placed, and the exact timing for each bouquet sits in its own card; the delivery page sets out how zones and time slots work.

A date and time can be booked into any zone, and the earlier the order goes in, the more slots are still free.

Where the child's favourite flower is already known, the mono bouquets section narrows the search fastest. A bouquet that has to survive a school run or a car journey travels better packed as one of the flowers in boxes. For a toy, balloons or sweets to go alongside it, the gifts to go with bouquets section lists them next to the flowers themselves.
