Seasonal bouquets worldwide: which flowers belong to which month

Chrysanthemum is the name that turns up most often among seasonal bouquets worldwide: in the field it flowers late in summer and through autumn, but greenhouses grow it all year. A seasonal bouquet is chosen by month and mood, and the grid splits into four sections that follow the year.

What's in season for a bouquet, and what grows all year

Spring brings tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and ranunculus, with lilac following in May. Summer opens with peonies, then hydrangea and sunflower, and late summer into autumn belongs to dahlias and chrysanthemums.

Chrysanthemum, gerbera, alstroemeria, lily, eustoma and carnation are greenhouse flowers, sold every month of the year. That is why chrysanthemum, lily and alstroemeria keep turning up in the grid regardless of season.

Peony is cut for most of the year, but not quite all of it: in the Netherlands, France, Germany and the UK its season runs from late April to June.

Chrysanthemums are grown under glass all year, while the sunflower is a summer field flower.

The four sections divide seasonal bouquets worldwide by time of year. Spring is set by the Spring Mimosa Basket: mimosa flowers from January to March, longer still in France, where the cut runs from November to March, which is also why it is a traditional flower for 8 March.

Winter is carried by the winter bouquet with nobilis, a noble fir with blue-grey needles that reached Danish Christmas markets after 1945, after which Denmark became Europe's largest producer of it. Few conifers hold their needles as well, and the stiff branches also suit wreaths and garlands.

Summer sits between the two, with the Bouquet with Sunflower "Yellow" and the Designer Bouquet 'Summer Evening'. Autumn, the largest of the four sections, is built around the chrysanthemum names that fill most of the grid.

How long seasonal flowers last in the vase

Chrysanthemum and alstroemeria last two to three weeks in water, a rose closer to one. Chrysanthemum leaves usually yellow before the flower does, so they get stripped off early. Jumilia, the chrysanthemum in the Bouquet of Single-Head Chrysanthemums and Jumilia, opens into a bud up to seven centimetres across, white at the base with a pink edge, and holds for up to two weeks with care.

Peony is bought at what florists call the marshmallow stage: the bud is already coloured and soft to the touch, opening within a day or two in warm water and lasting five to seven days. The same care covers all of them: cut stems at an angle, change the water every day or two, and keep the vase away from radiators, sun and fruit.

Seasonal flower delivery worldwide: made to order, photo first

Every bouquet is put together to order, and the flowers are bought only once payment has gone through. If a variety is out of stock that week, the florist substitutes something close in shade and price, and the substitution shows on the photo taken before the courier leaves, with room to ask for changes.

An occasion and a budget can also be described in chat, and a manager replies with options, photos and prices before any payment is taken. Delivery to the city centre is free, the delivery page has the rest, and the time itself is shown on each bouquet's own card.

A good place to start is by season: autumn bouquets for the largest of the four sections, spring bouquets for mimosa and the season's first colour, and summer bouquets for sunflowers and brighter designer pieces.
