Flowers in crates and hanging baskets worldwide: how the arrangement is built
Flowers in crates and hanging baskets worldwide include the White Roses and Delphinium Crate, where a line flower stands next to a mass one. Florists class delphinium, like gladiolus and stock, as the flower that sets the outline and height, while the rose gives the weight and the focal point. Choosing one starts with the container, then the flower, then the month.
What a flower crate is and how it is put together
A woven crate does not hold water, so florists line it with a waterproof sheet, usually film or foil, before anything goes in. Floral foam sits on the water and sinks under its own weight; pushed down by hand, it leaves dry pockets a stem can never reach. Leaves that would sit below the foam line are stripped off first. Some florists use wire mesh instead of foam.
Floral foam is a fairly recent tool: chemist Vernon Smithers patented it in Ohio in 1954. Inside the arrangement, flowers take on different roles. Line flowers such as delphinium and gladiolus rise above the rest to set the outline and height, while mass flowers such as rose and peony sit lower and give the piece its weight and centre. Smaller filler flowers pack the gaps between them.
Names in the grid follow three patterns. Some are simply numbered: Crate No. 4, Box No. 1, Box No. 2, Box No. 3. Others name the flower inside, like the White Roses and Delphinium Crate or the Peony Box. A third group names a mood or a recipient rather than the contents: Delicate Box, Mom's Flower Box and Large Pink Box. A name like that says nothing about the exact flowers or shade inside.
Peonies in Glass stands apart: its container is glass rather than a lined crate or box. The flowers in boxes section holds the wider list this page sits inside, and the flower baskets section covers the woven container.
When peony boxes are in season
A peony box or the glass arrangement depends on where the peonies are cut. In the Netherlands, France, Germany and the United Kingdom the season runs from late April into June. Chile supplies its crop from October to December, and Australia and New Zealand cut theirs from October into November and beyond. Israel, Italy and France cover the gap between February and April, so a peony can usually be found somewhere, though never everywhere at once.
Cut and arranged, a peony holds in the vase for five to seven days with care. The peonies range shows what else is cut alongside the boxed versions.
How long it lasts and how crate delivery worldwide works
A crate or box ages as one piece: the shortest-lived flower sets how long the whole arrangement looks good, and a rose on its own lasts around a week. Where the arrangement sits in foam, water it every day in a thin stream over the whole surface, and never tilt the container once it is filled. Keep it away from radiators, direct sun and a bowl of ripening fruit.
Each crate is put together only after the order comes in, and a photograph of the finished piece is sent before the courier leaves. Crate delivery worldwide is free within the centre, and most orders reach the recipient the day they are placed; the exact time shows on the product page. The card can be left unsigned, and payment is taken by Visa or Mastercard.
For a first look, the flowers in boxes list is the natural next stop. The peonies range narrows things down by season, and the flower baskets section suits anyone set on a woven container rather than a lined one.
