Flowers for a student worldwide: from the September 1st line to graduation

Four items in the grid are named for September 1st: a bouquet, seven gerberas, a bento cake and a balloon, which means flowers for a student worldwide can arrive as a single bouquet or as a small set built around it. The first choice is whether to send flowers alone or add a cake and a balloon to them; the second is which flowers will still look good once the first week has passed.

Bouquet, cake and balloon: the September 1st line

The line built around Bouquet "September 1st" also holds 7 Gerberas for September 1st, a Bento Cake "September 1st" and a Balloon for September 1st, so a school gift can grow past the flowers themselves. A bento cake is a palm-sized cake sold in a takeaway box; the format began in South Korea and takes its name from the Japanese lunch box, and the lid usually carries a short message for the recipient.

Cream is perishable. The USDA's rule allows it at room temperature for no more than two hours, or one hour once the air passes 32°C, so the cake is best moved to a fridge as soon as it arrives. A latex balloon keeps its lift for about half a day, while a foil one lasts several days. Balloons and sweets can be added to the same order, and a card with a written message comes free with any bouquet.

A rose keeps for about a week in water, while a chrysanthemum or a carnation stretches to two or three weeks. The grid holds several of them: Chrysanthemum Bouquet of 7, Chrysanthemum Bouquet "Cassiopeia", the Light Blue Chrysanthemum Bouquet and 15 Dianthus. A chrysanthemum's lower leaves tend to yellow before the flower fades, and they can simply be pulled off.

51 Jumilia in Airy Wrapping brings a different flower into the same conversation: its bud opens up to seven centimetres across, white at the base and pink at the edge, and with care it lasts up to two weeks. Whichever bouquet arrives, the routine stays the same: cut the stems at an angle, change the water every day or two, and keep the vase away from a radiator or a bowl of fruit.

Graduation flowers: cherry blossom season and leis

In Japan the school year ends in March, and graduation ceremonies, sotsugyoshiki, fall right when the cherry trees are in bloom. In Hawaii a graduate is often seen wearing so many leis that they reach the ears; the garlands are strung from plumeria, tuberose, carnation and orchids, and some are made from sweets or folded banknotes instead of flowers.

Carnation turns up on both sides of the world, and the same flower sits in the grid as 15 Dianthus.

Flowers for a student delivered worldwide: card, photo, phone

Ordering flowers for a student worldwide needs no account, just a name and a phone number. That number receives a photo of the finished bouquet before the courier sets off, and later a message once it has been handed over. An address helps but isn't required: the recipient's phone number is enough to arrange the handover.

The card can carry a signature or stay anonymous, since the courier only ever sees a name and an address. Orders for a set date and time are taken for any zone, and the earlier one is placed, the more time slots are open; the exact delivery window is shown on the bouquet's own page. In the city centre, delivery costs nothing extra.

A cake or a balloon from the September 1st line works as one of several gifts to go with bouquets, and where the choice feels too wide, a single flower kept simple is mono bouquets territory. The wider flowers for loved ones section covers other people on the gift list, and the delivery terms page lists what a courier needs for the address in hand.
