Knowledge Day worldwide: flowers that last past the first week of term

Among the roses and hydrangeas in the Knowledge Day worldwide section sit 15 Dianthus, and dianthus is simply carnations: they last two to three weeks in a vase, against about a week for a rose. The useful question when picking a bouquet here is how long it will still look good once it changes hands, and who will actually be carrying it home.

What goes into a Knowledge Day bouquet

Fifteen Lilies, fifteen Dianthus, eleven Lavender Spray Roses, fifteen Peony Lavender Roses and fifty-one Jumilia make up the single-flower side of the section, one slice of the full flower catalogue. Jumilia stands out on its own: the bud opens to about seven centimetres, with a white base fading into a pink edge.

Pink Hydrangea, Hydrangea in a Pink Jacket and Hydrangea Bouquet No. 3 work differently from the rest. Each hydrangea head is so large that a handful of stems already reads as a full, generous bouquet.

The named bouquets cover the same range under their own titles rather than plain colour names: Naomi is built on red roses, Raspberry and Lavender Smoothie lean into their names' shades, and Sierra, Lolita No. 2 and Blue Field give softer, mixed palettes. Every bouquet in the section is put together to order, and the flowers themselves are bought only once the order is paid for.

Spray roses carry several small heads on each stem, so even a mini bouquet looks full.

Carnations and chrysanthemums are the longest-lived flowers in the section, holding for two to three weeks in a vase. A rose lasts roughly a week, while Jumilia, given proper care, can stretch to about two weeks.

Hydrangea behaves differently again: it drinks more water than most cut flowers and takes some of it in through the petals rather than only through the stem. A head that has started to droop can be revived by lowering it into cool water for an hour or two, never much longer.

Lilies bring their own small warning. The pollen on the anthers stains fabric, so florists remove the anthers once the flower has opened; if a mark does land on clothing, lift it with sticky tape rather than rubbing it in. Lilies are also toxic to cats, worth remembering before sending them to a home with one.

Across the whole section the same basic care applies: cut each stem at an angle, change the water every day or two, and keep the vase away from radiators, direct sun and a bowl of fruit nearby.

Mini bouquet, bag or box: matching the size to the recipient

A Mini Bouquet works well for a small gesture or a large group, partly because spray roses already carry several small heads on a single stem, which fills the shape out without needing many stems. The "Warm Greetings" bag and the "Zakat" handbag turn the same idea into something a recipient can carry by a handle rather than in both hands.

For a desk or a shelf, "The Very Best" and "First Meeting" boxes hold their stems in floral foam soaked with water, so no vase is needed at either end. The foam is watered every day, in a thin stream over the whole surface rather than in one spot.

At the other end of the scale, 51 Jumilia is built to be a statement rather than a quiet gift, with its size doing most of the talking.

A few hydrangea stems are already a full bouquet, because every head is large.

A Knowledge Day worldwide order can be set for a specific date and time; the earlier it goes in, the more slots are still open, and the exact window shows up in the bouquet's own card. Several bouquets bound for different addresses can sit in one basket at checkout, with delivery worked out separately for each address.

The card that goes with the flowers is free, and can carry a signed message or be left anonymous. If there's no address to give, the recipient's phone number is enough on its own.

Before the courier sets off, a photo of the finished bouquet is sent to confirm what's on its way. Delivery in the centre is free, and payment is taken by Visa or Mastercard without setting up an account. Zones, rules and everything else about getting a bouquet to the door are laid out on the delivery terms page.

For a teacher who already has enough carnations, the roses on their own are a safer classic, and the full flower catalogue is worth a look if nothing here quite fits. Beyond the classroom, other occasions cover the rest of the school year and everything after it.
