Daffodil bouquets: what they do to a room
Put them anywhere and the room changes temperature. The yellow is unmixed and slightly acidic, closer to lemon rind than to butter, and it throws that tone onto the wall behind it in a way no cream rose manages.
That is the whole reason to buy them, and it is worth being honest about the trade.
Placement decides everything
A daffodil bunch is short, light and top heavy, so it belongs at eye level or below: a hall console, a kitchen worktop, a bedside table, the corner of a desk. Set it on a high shelf and you look at bare green stems from underneath, since the heads nod forward rather than facing up. Set it in the middle of a dining table and the same nodding habit turns the far side of the arrangement away from half the guests.
Against a white wall the colour reads as clean. Against warm oak or brass it goes slightly green and muddies, which surprises people who chose the flowers on a shop counter and hated them at home.
Scale is the second trap. These are small flowers on short stems, and a single bunch in a large room disappears, so two or three modest jars spread along one surface work better than one heroic vase.
Keep them cool. A tall window in full sun will open every bud by the second afternoon and finish the bunch a few days early, while a shaded corner away from the radiator holds them at the stage they arrived in.
One rule about the vase
Daffodil stems leak a thick sap from the cut. It is harmless to the flower itself and hostile to almost everything else, because it settles on other cut stems and blocks them from drinking. Roses and tulips sharing that water give up long before their time.
Florists deal with this by standing the stems in their own bucket for several hours before assembly, then changing the water and leaving the cuts alone. If you take a bunch home and want to add it to an arrangement already in a vase, do the same thing first, and do not re-cut the stems afterwards.
The simpler answer is to let them stand on their own.
Season, and the message it carries
They arrive early in spring, alongside tulips and hyacinths, and they carry that timing with them. A daffodil bouquet reads as a beginning rather than a summing up, which is why it suits a new flat, a first day back at work, a recovery, a birthday that nobody wants dressed up as a ceremony. For a formal anniversary it is the wrong register and no amount of wrapping fixes that.
The scent is real and stronger in the large-flowered types. In a small closed bedroom it builds up by evening. In a hallway it does exactly what you want.
Check two things when the courier hands them over worldwide. The bud should have broken through its papery sheath and tilted downward without the petals having fully opened, and the stem should be firm along its whole length, with no soft or browning patch near the base.
They are cheap, they are brief, and they ask for a jug of their own. Anyone who accepts those terms gets the strongest yellow of the year in a room that had nothing in it since autumn.
