### Daffodil bouquets in Bali: the right occasion for them is narrow Daffodils arrive early in spring and they carry that timing with them wherever they end up. The bunch reads as a beginning rather than as a summing up, which is why it suits a new flat, a first day back at work, a recovery, a birthday that nobody wants dressed up as a ceremony. For a formal anniversary it is the wrong register, and no amount of wrapping fixes that. The register is set by the flower itself, and the size of the bunch does not move it. A large armful of daffodils still reads as a cheerful gesture instead of a grand one, so adding stems fills more of the surface without moving the message. That is useful when the occasion genuinely is a small one and a limitation when it is not. In a small closed bedroom it builds up by evening; in a hallway it does exactly what you want. #### Two things to check at the door Ask the courier for a moment before the paper comes off completely. Three checks take a few seconds between them: - The bud should have broken through its papery sheath and tilted downward, without the petals having fully opened. - The stem should be firm along its whole length, with no soft patch anywhere on it. - The base of the stem should be clean, with no browning. None of the three requires the bunch to be unwrapped. Tilt the paper back at the top to see the bud, run two fingers down one stem through the wrapping to feel for a soft patch, and look at the cut ends where they sit in the sleeve. Doing all of it at the door is easier than working it out afterwards. A fully open flower on delivery day is not a fault, but it has less of its life ahead of it, and on a bunch bought to mark a beginning that is worth knowing before the paper goes in the bin.
