Bouquets by colour in Bali: the season behind a shade

White, cream and soft pink run through the whole year here and are the safest brief at short notice. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems reaching 120 cm cover that range, and lisianthus with ranunculus fills the half tones between them.

Peony pink is the exception in the list. Seasonal peonies arrive in a short window, and outside it the same shade has to be built from large roses or from ranunculus, which gets close without being identical.

A named shade is a request rather than a guarantee.

Ask about it a week ahead if the exact tone carries the meaning of the gift. That single question moves an order from hoping to knowing, and it costs nothing to ask.

Colour for a recipient you barely know

Cream, white and dusty pink read as attention rather than declaration, which is what most work occasions and most family dates actually need. Nothing in that range has to be explained afterwards.

Red is the one shade that carries a single meaning everywhere. Wrapping cannot soften it and neither can the card, so it belongs to the occasions where that meaning is the point.

Yellow is warm and slightly risky, since a parting superstition still attaches to it for some recipients, and apricot sidesteps the whole question at no cost to the look. Peach sits between the two and rarely troubles anyone. Lilac divides opinion sharply, which makes it a good choice for someone whose taste you already know and a poor one otherwise.

Deep tones are misjudged more often than pale ones, because burgundy and plum look rich in daylight and go flat under a dim lamp.

How the island handles a colour brief

Orchids provide the dense accent in almost any build, and macrophylla hydrangea supplies pastel and volume in the same head. Tropical foliage sets off anything pale, and it is the only part of the palette that never depends on a shipment.

Humidity stays high all year. Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and add a cooling element, which matters for pale flowers in particular, since a bruised white petal shows every mark a deep red one hides.

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours, and Kuta, Legian, Berawa, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and Ubud fall between the two depending on the street.

The drier months from April to October are easier for a pale brief. Between November and March a light bouquet spends less time outdoors on our side of the handover, which is a scheduling decision rather than a change to the flowers.

Tell us the shade in words, the district and who the flowers are for. If the recipient is somebody you know well, a divisive colour is a good bet, and if they are not, the pale end of the palette is the one that never needs a note of explanation attached to it.
