40 cm roses in Bali: flowers that fit somebody else's day
Short stems have a job most people never name out loud. They are for occasions where flowers have to fit into a room without rearranging it.
The address decides this more often than the occasion does.
A hospital ward is the clearest case. Space beside a bed is measured in centimetres, staff move around it all day, and anything tall ends up in a corridor within the hour. Forty centimetres sits on the cabinet next to a water jug and stays out of everyone's way. Some wards will not take fresh flowers at all, so ask before ordering rather than after.
The second case is a working surface. Reception counters and meeting tables are used for work, and whatever blocks the line of sight across them gets moved by whoever needs to see past it.
Third is the person living in one room. A studio has one table, and that table is also the desk and the place people eat.
The address problem here
Bali is not one delivery map. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, and Uluwatu, Tabanan and villas away from the main roads take up to 3 to 4 hours. That second band is where stem length stops being a matter of taste.
A bouquet that has spent four hours in a car needs to come out of its wrapping in one movement and go straight into water. Short stems allow that. Long ones want a bucket, a clear floor and somebody who knows what to do with them, and at a rented villa in the hills that person is not always there when the courier arrives.
What to tell us when the address is a villa:
- the name on the gate, plus whatever stands next to it, because a villa in Canggu or Berawa is easier to find by its neighbour than by its number
- a phone number the courier can reach on arrival
- whether anybody will be in, and who takes the bouquet if not
- the time that suits, keeping in mind the workshop runs from 9 AM to 10 PM and remote addresses take the longer band.
What the length costs you
Scale, mainly. The same head count on a long stem occupies far more air and photographs as a much bigger gift, so an ocean villa dinner where the flowers have to read across a terrace calls for a different grade. Buds tend to be smaller too, because stem length and head size both come from the variety.
Ask about the variety when you order.
Care, which is brief at this height
Any ordinary glass vase works, roughly two thirds of the bouquet in height, and most homes already own one. Water travels a short distance to the bud here, so the fold under the head that spoils tall roses turns up far less often. Change the water completely every day or two, strip any leaf that would sit below the waterline, and recut the ends at an angle with a sharp knife. Fresh roses hold one to two weeks that way, and in a room with the air conditioning on they can hold a little longer.
"Guests ask for the biggest bunch we can build, then send a photograph of it standing on the only free surface in the room. That surface is usually forty centimetres wide."

Payment goes through OVO, DANA or cash to the courier, and for a short bouquet the whole order is usually closed before the car leaves. If you are sending to a home you have never seen, this grade asks the least of the person receiving it. They need a glass, some water and thirty seconds, and the flowers are settled where they will spend the week.
