Birthday flowers in Bali: who sends them and where they land

Birthday bouquet with orchids and tropical foliage

The sender is usually someone who met the recipient here. A friend from the coworking floor, a neighbour two villas down, a partner who arrived on the same flight. That shifts the brief before a stem is chosen, because whoever orders knows the room, the gate and the hour the party starts.

Family orders come in too, mostly from a mother or a sister six time zones away. Those arrive with a date, a name and a hope that we know where Berawa is, and a working phone number matters more on those than the flower choice.

Budgets sit differently when a friend is paying. Orders start at 650,000 IDR, and many land between that and roughly double it. Nobody wants to hand a housemate an armful that reads as a declaration, so the volume goes into greenery and the rose count stays modest.

Sized by who is getting it

The recipient settles the size first.

  • A wife or partner — roses at 60–90 cm, or Ecuadorian stems to 120 cm if the villa has the height.
  • A friend — colour over formality: lisianthus, ranunculus and orchids, built wide rather than tall.
  • A colleague — a box or basket that stands on a desk, no water to manage, nothing red.
  • A mother visiting — finished and low, easy to leave behind in a rented kitchen.

The visiting-mother case comes up more than you would guess. Parents fly in for a fortnight and the birthday lands mid-trip, in a villa none of them has seen. She has no vase and no scissors, so a basket or a box that carries its own water saves her the whole job of arranging.

Add-ons carry more weight here than at home. There is no family kitchen, so nobody is baking. A cake ordered with the bouquet arrives on the same bike and lands in the same photograph. Macarons soften fast above 30 °C and suit the short runs to Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur. Chocolate-covered strawberries have the same limit, so they travel in a cooled box and we would sooner move the hour than send them out at midday.

The pin, the gate and the hour

For a surprise, the pin has to come from the sender. Asking the recipient for their own address ends the surprise in one message, and a friend usually has the location saved already, because they have ridden there at night.

Venues split three ways. A coworking floor in Canggu takes the delivery at a reception desk, so it has to hold an hour on a warm surface. A restaurant in Seminyak wants it ahead of the booking, handed to a manager with the table name. A pool party is the hardest of the three, because the bouquet gets moved twice, sits on wet tile and still has to photograph at nine in the evening.

Two windows work on the day. Before eleven, while the air is still moving, or after four, once the terrace has come out of the sun and people are starting to arrive.

Birthday delivery to a villa in Canggu

Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and pack a cooling element, though the flower list does more than the packaging. Orchids and tropical foliage hold a long afternoon, and dendrobium with monstera leaf is still standing when the last guests leave. Open roses, hydrangea and peonies soften first, so they sit at the centre where the greenery shades them and the cooling element is closest.

"I ask one thing before a birthday order: is somebody carrying this home on a scooter at midnight. The answer changes the height, the wrap and half the flower list."

— JFLOO florist

Half of what we deliver on a birthday takes a second journey. A box with a handle or a basket with a rigid base survives it. A tall glass vase makes that trip once. The bouquet rides home from the restaurant wedged between the footwell and the handlebars, which is why 120 cm Ecuadorian roses are wrong for a dinner that ends late.

Card payment works from anywhere, and the slot you pick runs on island time, GMT+8. On the island QRIS, GoPay, OVO and DANA all go through, and the courier takes cash at the gate. Before he leaves we send a photograph over WhatsApp or Telegram, which matters when the sender is asleep by the time the flowers reach the table.

For anything pinned to an hour — a table at seven, a boat at nine, a flight out the next morning — order the day before. We build birthday flowers in Bali around a slot and a room, so send the hour, the map pin and the name of whoever is carrying it home.
