Heat, damp and the road

Above 30 °C in high humidity the bunch travels with firm wrapping and a cooling element, and that wrapping comes off the moment it arrives. Muted tones fade under light faster than saturated ones and the petal margins dry earlier, so what this bunch wants is shade in transit and air at the address. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours. From November to March we add route time for the rain, and those months are kinder to the colour than the dry ones.

Long routes get the tighter wrap.

That is a trade rather than a free improvement. Firmer packing protects the heads from movement in the vehicle, and it also holds warm damp air against the outer petals, which on a smoky tone shows up as a glassy edge rather than as damage. The way round it is time: the wrap comes off, the stems get a fresh slanted cut, and within an hour in a cool room the colour is back where it started. Nobody has to do anything more than that.

The working day is 9 AM to 10 PM. For an address where somebody other than the recipient takes delivery, ask for the bunch to be built low and compact instead of tall. The courier hands it over at a reception desk, it travels to a room or a windowsill in one hand, and small heads survive that journey better than a single wide bloom on a long neck ever does.

Lisianthus and ranunculus at the cream end of the range make this shade read as haze rather than as a colour in its own right. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm give height when the bunch needs it. Tropical foliage goes in sparingly, because a dark heavy leaf beside smoke takes all the contrast for itself.
