Flowers in a hat box in Bali: there is nothing here to knock over

A filled vase is a tall thing with all its weight at the top and open water inside it. A sleeve catches it, a car brakes, and the water ends up on a table, a document or a seat.

A round box behaves in the opposite way. The base is wide and flat, the water is held inside a block of soaked foam rather than sloshing about, and every stem is fixed at the angle it was set at, so tilting the whole thing does not rearrange it.

That is a duller virtue than the look of the flowers, and it is the reason this shape keeps being ordered.

Households where it matters

Homes with cats, chiefly. A vase on a windowsill is an invitation and a box is not, since there is nothing to topple and nothing to fish drinking water out of.

Small children come next, then anyone unsteady on their feet, then the person recovering at home who should not be carrying anything heavy to a sink. Filling and moving a vase is more work than it sounds when you are ill.

Rented houses are the fourth group here. A place taken for a month rarely has a vase in it at all, and a box removes the question entirely.

Getting one across the island

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours, and this format takes that road better than paper does, since every stem is already standing in water before it leaves. Above 30 °C in high humidity we close the packing more firmly and add a cooling element, and in the rainy season from November to March we add route time.

What goes in

Macrophylla hydrangea holds the centre and drinks harder than anything else in the box. Imported roses and lisianthus sit steady around it, ranunculus and seasonal peonies fill the middle layer, orchids take the upper line, and tropical foliage runs over the foam at the rim.

Everything in it is dealt with one head at a time. A spent flower lifts out with its stem and the gap gets covered with a leaf from the rim, because a socket punched through foam holds no water and a fresh stem pushed into it fails faster than it would on a dry table.

Take the lid off on arrival and leave it off. In a warm room the air underneath goes damp and still within an evening, and pale petals in the top layer come up with brown spotting that nothing removes.
