Giant rose bouquets in Bali: why the stems arrive thirsty

Giant rose bouquet unwrapped and recut on arrival at a villa in Bali

Roses travel dry. Heads are packed close, stems are bound, and the whole piece may spend most of a day out of water before it reaches anyone. That is normal for the trade, and it has one consequence worth knowing about.

Air draws into the cut end and lodges in the stem. The neck below the bud loses pressure and folds over, and once a head has dropped that way it does not come back up. A hundred stem piece can lose a dozen heads to something that took twenty minutes to happen. Unwrapping on arrival rather than in the evening removes most of the risk.

A folded head is rarely an old flower. It is a stem that had air where water should have been.

"The heads that droop on day one almost never droop for the reason people assume. They drooped inside the wrapping, before anyone put them anywhere."

— JFLOO florist

The fix is mechanical. Cut the end off again, get the stem into a deep container quickly, and give it an hour before deciding anything. Most of them come back.

The room has to give something up

A large rose piece needs floor space and a clear approach to it. In a rented apartment it takes the corner where people put their bags, and it will be knocked at least once a day. In a villa it has somewhere proper to stand. That difference decides more about how the week goes than the number of stems does.

Heat is the other cost the room pays. A warm draught, or an hour of direct sun through glass, shortens a rose week to a rose weekend.

The bag corner is the worst corner.

What the island adds

Humidity above 30 °C works on a giant differently than on a small bunch. Air does not move inside a packed spiral, so the middle of the piece warms faster than the edge and the buds there open first. We send these out with tighter buds for that reason and ask that the wrapping comes off at the door. In the rainy season from November to March we add route time, which is more time out of water. None of that matters if the piece is unwrapped and cut within the hour.

We work 9 AM to 10 PM. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, and Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours. A giant going the long way out is built more closed and travels upright and secured.

Where these end up follows the same logic as the floor space. Ocean villas take them and have the room for them. Hotels take them and hand them on, with The St. Regis Bali Resort, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, The Legian Seminyak and Alila Villas Uluwatu all carrying a piece that size inside. A wedding venue in Jimbaran is the easiest case of all, because the arrangement stands where it is put and nobody moves it again.

Payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier, and orders start at 650000 IDR. A giant sits well above that line in any case.

Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm each build a giant well, though never in the same spiral. Head diameter and opening speed differ, so a mixed one separates into two groups by the fourth day. One variety from one batch is the only build that holds together.

Giant rose bouquets in Bali are worth ordering with that first hour agreed in advance. Tell us who receives the piece, where it will stand, and whether anyone will be there to unwrap it. We build the stage of the bud around that answer. A piece that waits two hours at a villa gate is a different build from one handed over at the door.
