Roses by bouquet shape in Bali: what to check while the courier is still there

A product photograph shows the flattering angle of whatever it is selling. Every shape has one place where a rushed build gives itself away, and the round hand-tied bouquet, the one most orders end up being, has two. Both take a moment to check at the door.

The round hand-tied bouquet

Turn it and watch the outline. A spiral build reads as a slightly domed circle from any side, with the centre a little higher than the rim, and the heads sit at staggered depths instead of in one flat plane.

Flatness is the tell. It means the stems were bundled straight rather than crossed, and a straight bundle loosens in the vase within a day of arriving.

The second place to look is the binding point, low down where the tape or string sits. Stems should leave the tie fanning outwards, like the base of a broom, which is what holds the shape once the wrapping comes off. If they run out of the tie in a tight parallel column, nothing is holding that bouquet together except paper.

Neither check needs any expertise. Both are worth doing before the courier leaves, because a hand-tied bouquet is the one shape a florist can rebuild on the spot, and nobody minds being asked.

Four addresses account for most of the round bouquets we send out:

Getting a hand-tied bouquet across the island

Distance is the reason we ask where it is going before we ask what it should look like. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours, and a hand-tied bunch travels the whole way in a paper cone with a water vial at the cut. Heads touch each other on the bends, and pale varieties show that first, along the petal edge. Nothing about the build prevents it, so the answer is either a shorter route or a different shape.

Heat compounds all of it.

Above 30 °C and in high humidity we wrap firmly and add a cooling element, which protects the build but makes the cone bulkier to carry. On the longest routes we suggest a foam base instead and say why.

The first hour at the address matters more than the drive. Cut the stems again at an angle, strip whatever leaf would sit under water, and change the water every other day. Imported roses reach us at 60 to 90 cm, so there is length to spare for those recuts, which is exactly what a bouquet needs and a boxed arrangement never has.
